If you're out of space on your phone you'll have to delete or synce some of the data off your phone to Free up space. You could, for example, import your camera photos an videos to iPhoto on your Mac then delete them from your phone to free up space.

Apr 2, 2014 2:20 PM in response to randers4by Kathleen8799,Thank you so much for your help. Okay, it says I have 1.4gb available and 5.0gb used. Let me add that when I have tried to upadate my software on my phone, it also states I cannot do that because I do not have enough space. I have nothing large on my phone that i am aware of. I do not have videos, etc..

If you go to Settings>General>Usage again and wait for the list of apps to open, you will get an idea of what is using the space on your phone. You may need to tap Show all Apps in order to see them all. Look through the list and see if you can determine the apps using most of your space.
You might also want to connect your phone to your computer using your usb cable, open iTunes, then click on the name of your phone in iTunes and look at the segmented usage bar at the bottom. Hover your mouse over the yellow segment on the right to see how large "Other" is (see image below). If it's significantly larger than 1-2GBs you probably need to restore your phone to clear unnecessary cache files.
This will also give you an idea what categories of data are using most of the space on your phone.
