Q: Setting up wireless printer for HP Deskjet 3052 j11

So I changed the password for my wireless and I couldnt figure out how to get my printer to hook up to it again so I deleted the software and was going to reinstall. Big mistake! The cd wouldnt work (old software since I now have 10.9) and I've had the run around ever since. I've downloaded the printer driver from apple - HP Printer driver 2.16.1 - and I can now print using a usb cord but I have no idea how to set up wireless printing! I cant find the driver in finder or in applications. There was no set up after downloading and I dont understand the instructions on how to set up using wpa or adding a pin through the wireless configuration. Any help would be very much appreciated!

Hi nadasaw1, first, make sure that wi-fi is still enabled on the printer and it has a valid address on the network. You should be able to do that either from the front panel or some web admin tool.

Next, go to System Preferences > Printers & Scanners and click the "+" button. See if the printer appears in the list of printers to add.

If it is there, select it and let it choose the driver in the "Use" field; it may come up with the actual name of the printer model or it may just say "Auto Select".

Once added, the printer will have a different name. You can right-click it and rename it if you want. Test the new printer (make sure to select the new printer when test printing a pdf or whatever); make sure printing is working via wireless by pulling out the usb cable.

P.S. you don't see any app for the HP drivers because the install just gives the drivers to os x , no user interface to them. You adjust the printers properties in any app you want to print from and then saving that as a preset for future use.

I should also have said that if you are not sure how to set up the printer for wireless (using the methods you describe, as that seems to be where you're at) do my second paragraph above anyway. If it's not listed, we'll step through the printer's wireless config.

My issue isnt with printing in general. I can do that. My printer shows up fine. Its setting up the wireless. I was always able to do this through the setup wizard that came with the Hewlett packard software but i no longer have that since you can only use apple downloads for mavericks. screen-capture-1.png

This is what I can see.

This is what my printer looks like. There should be a blue glowing light next to the wireless button but its now blinking because its not connected.

What I dont know how to do is connect the printer to my wireless network without the software setup. There's probably an easy fix that I'm just not seeing and Im going to feel foolish later but at the moment I have no idea what my next step should be.

I cant input my wireless password directly into the printer and the other three options involve using the set up assistant to configure. I guess my major problem is that I dont have the set up assistant. If there was someway for me to get that it would be great. But i cant download the drivers directly from HP because I have 10.9 only from apple which didnt give me a set up assistant.

So, the printer listed in the Printers & Scanners window, is that the one that uses the USB connection? I suspect so. What happens when you click the "+" button... Do any printers show in the list?

I can see from what you say about he blinking light that you don't have a working wireless connection. The following is from HP for your printer:

"If you are installing the printer in OS X v10.9 for the first time, you must use the method 'Connect to the wireless network using Wi-Fi Protected Setup.'"

So, this all means that if you don't see the printer listed as I referred to above (when you click "+"), then we must treat it as "first time" and the next step is to make sure your wireless router has a WPS button. Does it?

When I click the + button no other printer shows up. Ive been trying to connect using the wi-fi protected setup on the printer. I went on my router configration page and tried both the pin and wps method. I insert the pin, press okay on my printer then on my computer and it says that the configuration was succesful but I still have a blue blinking light. I press the wps button (press wps button remotely) - again successful configuration but no wireless printing.

Ok. Next, from HP for your printer:

"Step one: Connect to the wireless network using Wi-Fi Protected Setup

Use one the push button or PIN method to connect the printer to the wireless network

    Option one: Push button
    1. On the printer control panel, press and hold the Wireless button for 3 seconds. The wireless light starts blinking.
NOTE:The printer starts a timer that allows you about two minutes to press the WPS button on the wireless router.

    2. Press and hold the WPS button on the wireless router for several seconds. The printer automatically finds the wireless network and then configures the connection."

Note that it says "starts blinking", implying that the printer should be starting from a point where the light is completely off. Is there a reset for your printer? Otherwise turn it off and back on... Is the light then off?

It would also be a good idea to reset the router, then we can start clean at both ends.

My physical router doesnt have a wps. I can acess it through my router configuration but cant really "press it for 3 seconds". its just click and go.

Besides that it says it was configured successfully but obviously there is a miscomunitcation between the two devices.

If I could just get HP set up assistant it would go so much smoother. I dont understand how the apple driver download doesnt come with anything. I dont even know where it downloaded to.

Underneath "Status - Idle" it has a "disabled"- select enabled and try again.

It installed a whole bunch of files in various system folders (for example icons, which is why the printer "looks" like the real thing). I wouldn't be messing with them!

Putting on enabled now gets me an error sign when I press the wps button and an error- invalid pin when i enter the pin.

I think Im going to call it a night. I very much appreciate you helping me out! If you find a miracle cure please let me know. Otherwise I think I'm gonna have to get used to the cord life. Thank you again.
