Mar 17, 2014 9:05 PM in response to tdm22by Allan Eckert,You said, :"I am really dismayed by all the posters here who have dismissed Darryl-1's post and suggested that he is somehow at fault."
I am not sure about everyone but I was not suggesting that the faults was Darryl's but that it was with his Mac that was at fault instead which is quite a different thing.
The one thing I do blame Darryl for is his thinking that Apple should fix his Mac.

Mar 18, 2014 8:05 AM in response to Allan Eckertby tdm22,My misunderstanding. I thought Apple Support Communities were for supporting people with problems by helping them solve their problems. I didn't realize the point was to support Apple.
I feel so bad now that I expected my Mac to work on the third day of usage. I now realize it's my fault for thinking that Apple should deliver a product that can function. thanks for helping me realize that I broke my mac.

Mar 19, 2014 7:00 AM in response to darryl-1by BobHarris,Running out of application memory is an indication that the group of apps you are running concurrently is trying to use more virtual memory that Mac OS X is able to manage.
Applications -> Utilities -> Activity Monitor may be able to identify the set of apps causing your issue.
If you can quit memory hungry apps you are not using, you can minimize the problem.

Mar 19, 2014 11:28 AM in response to tdm22by darryl-1,Hi tdm22! Read what you had to say and agree, this is an Apple problem to many other have the same thing!
I such a shame when we have someone who should be helping being "a smart ..s". Here is what I have found this is, a huge problem that people that actually use the computer have found happening since Mavericks!
The only fix that I have found so far is to reset the pramiters do this hold the command and options down along with the p & r on a start up keep holding down untill it chimes 4 times then allow it to start up! It will help, not sure if it a real fix, and along with that go into permission and repair permissions in disk utility.
We only go on here to get info to fix a problem, so Apple TROLS go home!
You would think a level 8 would actuall know something instead of a sarcastic, stumbling block!

Mar 19, 2014 11:35 AM in response to Allan Eckertby darryl-1,Not thinking Apple should fix my Mac? I have the same problem in 4 systems, and so do a lot of other people, is that so hard to understand that we have a problem Huston? Darryl don't need his Mac fixed he need the Mavericks software fixed!

Mar 19, 2014 11:43 AM in response to darryl-1by sberman,Try removing (completely uninstalling) Firefox and other memory hogging apps and see how big a change you observe.

Mar 20, 2014 10:50 AM in response to sbermanby darryl-1,I have quit Fox Fire. And am running Safari. I did notice that system is still sluggish, for instance I clicked on Excel to get some log in info and a "spinning whee". As you can see memory used is still not used? thathcomputer

The speed of my computer's, with the spinning wheel, and waiting, I guess that I kinda got use to it. Not sure if Fox Fire will solve it since I had spinning wheel after I quit it. But I did notice that the longer I am on the computer the more memory is used? Before Mavericks I would have many applications on for weeks and did not see any slow operating? I also have Parallels access off. But no difference.

Mar 24, 2014 9:41 PM in response to darryl-1by lostindc,This is very much a common problem since maverick came about. Apple tech support is well aware of this and has let me know (hinted) that things are going on behind the scenes to repair. Hopefully it is done soon. This has rendered one of my macs useless.
-
Apr 3, 2014 10:23 AM in response to lostindcby darryl-1,The spinning wheel is just happening so much! If Mac user's were aware that this is a Mavericks problem I think there would be much more concern. I have tried to work around this and have quit using Fox Fire because it does use a lot of memory but that did not solve it.
The problem is the longer Mavericks runs the more memory it uses.
So Mavericks bug is you now must restart on a regular basis. Mavericks owns it and the developer are doing a disservice to customers by not getting serious and fixing it. If I was not a Apple lover I would bail out now. At Least Come up with a way to go back to 10.8 or Lyon or Snow Lepord would be an improvement as slow, freezing, restarting!

Apr 3, 2014 10:48 AM in response to darryl-1by Drew Reece,darryl-1, you have my sympathy, but the images you keep posting of the memory all look fine. Are they from around the time of an 'out of memory dialog'?
Can you please confirm you are seeing this dialog (you never explicitly said - only your post title infers this).
Firstly the Swap used is 0 Bytes - this is great, you want this to remain low, once it starts growing past a GB or two you know you have too little RAM installed. Swap is when memory has run out & it gets written to disk (which is a slow process). You can see a spinning beachball sometimes with this (but this isn't happening in those images).
Compressed Memory is also low (90MB and 0 Bytes). This is new to 10.9 and happens before memory runs over into 'Swap used'. You have so little here that the OS looks like it is coping very will in terms of memory usage.
The Memory pressure graph is all green & is low - the system hasn't had any tasks that have loaded the memory at all recently. (Orange = compression, red = Swap - you have neither).
The Used memory is 'high' because 10.9 will keep everything in RAM when it gets used. It will very quickly free that RAM when some other process needs more. It should make the system snappier. It's not actually a problem to use all the RAM, so long as the OS manages it correctly.
The spinning beach ball isn't always a RAM issue, it can appear on Macs with slow HD's. Disk speed has a massive factor on performance. It's also possible that mis-configured network settings can cause trouble elsewhere or it could be other hardware issues…
I don't have an easy answer, but you appear to be focusing only on RAM when your own data shows no signs of RAM issues.
Please post more data if you have it, from here it looks like you could be jumping the gun & blaming RAM for something that could be something else. (note: I'm not sure iuf you had the out of RAM message, so don't flame me yet ).
Would you like to show us what is installed on one of those 4 Macs? Pick one with good backups that is causing you trouble. If we see any signs of bad software you can see if updating or removing it makes anything better.
Certain older software running in the core of the OS can cause many issues elsewhere in the OS (like Kapersky).
Run this & post the report…
http://www.etresoft.com/etrecheck
Another option is to reinstall 10.9 (it overwrites only the OS files) it can resolve weird issues that some people have had. I cannot understand how multiple Macs would get bad installations - it seems more like a freak one off error.
The final option is to erase the HD & clean install 10.9. If you can do that on one Mac, you should see that 10.9 can run well (or you will verify that 10.9 is a lame duck).
Do you want to look into this or just write off 10.9 as a lemon & give up until fixes rain down from software updates?

Apr 5, 2014 1:40 PM in response to tdm22by dianeoforegon,Troubleshooting is a process of elimination. Let's go through some common steps to troubleshoot.
1) Restart in Safe Boot mode.
Safe boot
* shutdown
* start the Mac and *wait* for the startup chime to sound
* after the sound, press and hold down the shift key
* keep holding and *wait* until the grey Apple logo appears
* now release the shift key and just wait (it could take a few minutes)
* eventually the login screen appears with the words SAFE BOOT
* continue to log in and see if the problem goes away.
If yes, then we need to look at the items disabled by Safe Boot. I would start with fonts.
2) Testing in a new User will quickly tell you if the problem is system wide or if it's your User's folder that contains the problem.
CREATE A NEW USER
Go to System Preferences --> Create a New User in Accounts. Switch to the New User by logging out/in or use Fast User Switching.
Do you still see the issue?
If yes, then the problem is with your base files.
If no, then the problem is in your User's folder.
3) Run Combo updater over your current install.
OS X Mavericks 10.9.2 Update (Combo)
http://support.apple.com/downloads/DL1726/en_US/OSXUpdCombo10.9.2.dmg
Combo updaters will install on the same version as they're applying--no need to roll back or do a clean install.
MORE INFO ON WHY RUNNING COMBO FIXES ISSUES
Apple updates available from the Software Update application are incremental updates. Delta updates are also incremental updates and are available from Apple Downloads (software updates are generally smaller than delta updates). The Combo updates contain all incremental updates and will update files that could have become corrupted.
"Delta" updaters can only take you from one version to the next. For example: 10.9.1 to 10.9.2. If somehow the 10.9.2 is missing something it should have, and that something isn't changed between 10.9.1 and 10.9.2 it will still be stale after the delta update.
4) Run Font Book and select Validate Fonts.
This link has specific help for Office for Mac fonts but it includes the basics steps to troubleshoot fonts.
http://www.officeformachelp.com/office/font-management/
5) Do a clean install of Mavericks. I suggest if you have the space to create a small partition and install Mavericks. 25GB would give you the opportunity to some limited testing before taking the plunge.
If the clean install does not have the memory issues, then backup your entire drive to an external drive using clone software. boot from the clone and erase your in internal drive and install Mavericks. Be very careful about bringing over your old data from the clone. Install applications one at a time that have been troublesome and test before adding others.
Both of these applications are free to create a clone.

CCC http://www.bombich.com/download.html
If you continue to need help, I suggest you start your own discussion so YOUR issues can get the detailed help needed. Trying to help multiple users can get confusing.
Hope this helps!
