Q: HP Deskjet 3050a WILL. NOT. SCAN.

Hi all. Have a Mac Mini running OS 10.9.2 and an HP Deskjet 3050a that prints without a problem over wifi or USB connection. However, no matter how hard I try, I cannot get it to scan. When I open the scanner, it either hangs indefinitely on the sceen that says "waiting for scanner" or I get the error message "failed to open a connection on this device." I have tried to access the scanner via the printer window and through image capture.

I have googled this problem extensively and tried many different potential solutions with little success.  I deleted my printer through system preferences and re-added it. I deleted all of the folders associated with HP in my printers folder in Library. I've run software update many times. I was able to get it to scan ONE TIME last week, and now it's back to not scanning again.

So, any wild and new suggestions for how I might get it to work?

Mac mini, OS X Mavericks (10.9.2)

    Hi ...

Download and install the drivers for your model printer and v10.9 Mavericks here > Software & driver downloads HP Deskjet 3050A

When you are finished installing the drivers, restart your Mac. Then turn off the printer then turn it back on then try to print.

The problem is that when you enter 10.9 as your OS, it only tells you to run software update from the Apple menu, and that if it says you are up to date there is no additional software to download. The only driver available for download is e-print. Again, the printing function works fine. It is only scanning that I cannot get it to do.

Eric: if I go into Applications and the folder Hewlett Packer, the only thing in there is e-print. There is no program present called HP Scan, and when I google this software, it brings me back to the page to download drivers, where I'm again prompted to input my OS and told to update my software, I simply have to run Software Update from the Apple menu. It just takes me round and round in circles.

    Hi ..

There is an alternative to scanning. See if this works for you...

Connect the scanner to your Mac whether Wi-Fi or USB.

    Launch Image Capture.

Click the very small black box bottom left side of the Image Capture window.

You'll see this pop up menu:   Connecting this (device) opens:

You can select a default app to scan (Image Capture) and select a folder from the Import To pop up menu on the right to save scanned files to.

If you need help with the Image Capture software, click Help from the Image Capture menu bar.

Well, I tried once more to delete everything, and then ran software update again and re-downloaded through Apple's Software Update. Now it seems to be working again. I'm not sure why this seems to be such a problem, as there seem to be many of us out there with scanning woes, but for the time being it's working again. Thanks all for your input.

Thank you so much.   Your advice on Image Capture solved the problem for me.  The scanner sprang to life and now works properly.
