Q: Your System has Run out of Application memory

I upgraded to Mavericks from Mountain Lion, and I have been getting the error message "Your System has Run out of Application memory", and I am forced to restart the computer to be able to keep working.

I have been monitoring the Activity Monitor and I have not found a process that is increasing the amount of memory used. I have seen a proliferation of processes.

I have an iMac 27-inch, Late 2012 with a 3.4 GHz Intel Core i7 and 24 GB 1600 MHz DDR3.

Well it has been a few months, and for the first time in 20 years I am going to go buy a **** windows machine.  Apple has yet to fix the issue, and I need a computer.

That nails it you have 2 computers and the one with the problem is on Mavericks, Thanks for that post. I have 4 running Mavericks and they are all slow, so Mavericks is really a downgrade!

And I have 6 Macs, all running Mavericks, all upgraded.

They are very fast, they are an upgrade from their previous versions of OS X (anything from 10.6 to 10.8)

There is always a reason why, but sometimes it can take patience to find it.

    Want to try?

    You migrated from a G4?

That explains it - non of the old PPC apps would run on an Intel Mac

I think many other users are migrating data & apps from OS's that have seen versions from 10.4 - 10.8. It means the code could technically run (since it's mostly compiled for Intel), but uses methods that don't play well with sandboxing & new memory management. For whatever reason 10.9 is choking on old system extensions etc.

Every major OS has these teething troubles, I think the free nature of 10.9 & Apples pushy 'upgrade, upgrade, upgrade' mantra made more people jump without considering the state of their machines.

OS updates used to be something people prepared for (money & time is good for provoking thought & debate), now they just hit an install button & get annoyed when it fails.

Anecdotally, Mac users used to ask me "should I upgrade to [the latest cat]?", now they say "I updated to [x], why doesn't this work anymore?"

I think you should read that post again.

I am amazed to see all these problems in this thread, as my iMac runs flawlessly with Safari, iMovie, Firefox, Numbers, you name it, Mail, even Mathematica. If I had realized how much faster and how trouble-free it would be, I would have bought it sooner.

Doesn't sound like someone with Mavericks problems to me.

You're right, I'm sure. I still find old PowerPC stuff and throw it away. I had to move my favorite scanner to an old PowerPC Mini I had laying around, since an Intel driver for it isn't available. A minor inconvenience and one I was expecting. Well worth it for the improvements I got.

Yes teething troubles. We are buying the most expensive system and I don't expect this, this is real big, and there are so many different possibilites that could cause problems, IT'S APPLES'S PROBLEM TO FIX! Coupertino has the personell to fix, patch or downgrade, users just don't have the time.

I read it as though you were using it as an example of problems, but I saw the post as the opposite, problems avoided with a little preparation. And a successful installation of OSX.

I sincerely tried to explain how you can get help on these forums in your own thread darryl-1…

    https://discussions.apple.com/message/25373524#25373524

You could be right - Apple may have messed up your system, unfortunately your other posts don't give us enough to go on, we are here to try to help but it takes two to tango.

If you really want to take it to Apple's door book a Genuis bar appointment or call Applecare, otherwise you are just telling people who mostly don't work for Apple that Apple has problems. We neither care about that or can do anything to alter it (even if it is an actual fact, which it isn't).

We can however give you the benefit of our experience (for free, on our own time) & we can give you a shot of changing how broken your Macs are.

    For the final time…

Would you like to show us what is installed on one of those 4 failing Macs?

Run this & post the report to your thread…

    Thank you.

Your startup disk becoming getting full, these spinning disks perform slower the more data you have on them, so consider freeing up some space if you want the best speed from it. Gory details are explained at http://macperformanceguide.com/Storage-WhyYouNeedMoreThanYouNeed.html

The tun/tap startup items are using an old method to load into the system - these need to be removed (ideally with the developers uninstall tools or instructions). They may be part of Wireshark or another network based sniffer/ router/ forwarder.

There also appears to be a foo.tap kernel extension - that will need updating or removing.

Your RAM looks surprisingly OK, the Mac has been running for 9 days, but you only have 300MB of data that has been swapped to disk - this is odd considering the dialogs.

Safari looks busy, take a look at all the internet plugins remove or update them & also update any Safari extensions.

Other users have mentioned Kapersky's AV causing issues, please ensure this is also the latest version (and it is 10.9 supported). Personally I would remove it for a few days & see if the issue doesn't reappear. Once the system is stable you can reinstall it & if things go wrong you know what to look at removing. It does run 2 different background jobs & 3 kernel extensions within the core of the OS.

You can also try a new user account to rule out all of your user login items. Just make one in 'System preferences > Users & groups'. Logout and login as that new user, if the issue reappears you know your login items are OK, but still try to update any that may be old.

I think MacFuse has been replaced by OSXFuse - http://osxfuse.github.io

mds_stores is part of Spotlight's indexing process. Spotlight will ise various 'metadata importers' to read third party file formats, so if they are not up to date they can break the indexing process. Ensure apps like Adobe Reader are updated too, since they may have older importers installed.

Everything loading at the system level needs to be up to date or removed if you don't use it.

Hopefully some colors will make it clear what is loading where.

Red items are loaded at the system level (not necessarily bad, but they have the potential to modify the OS).

Blue items are loaded at the user level.

Pink items are to get attention :^)

    Cleanup:

All the usual caveats apply, backup before you modify the system, delete the items (or move them to another disk or folder if you are worried about deleting the wrong thing) but ensure the originals are gone or updated.

Use the Finders "Go menu > Go to Folder…" when you need to open the hidden ~/Library (your users library).

Reboot for the system changes to take effect.

    Startup Items: Stored in /Library/StartupItems/

Startup Items have been discontinued by Apple since Mac OS 10.4. They are responsible for making changes at a system level. Remove them all or spend time ensuring ALL related software is up to date. You need a very good reason to have anything installed in there. The developers are ignoring Apple guidelines by installing these - not a good sign.

    Kernel Extensions: Stored in /Library/Extensions/

Kernel Extensions also load third party code, but they insert it into the 'core' of the OS. These can be safe, however you must ensure the related tools or apps are up to date, otherwise the system is basically built upon quicksand. Remove them all & see if the OS works better.

    Launchd jobs: several types

    LaunchAgents          - Stored in /Library/LaunchAgents

    LaunchDaemons       - Stored in /Library/LaunchDaemons

User LaunchAgents   - Stored in ~/Library/LaunchAgents

These are all background jobs, they are not necessarily bad, but if they are loading old code it could be doing untold damage to the performance & stability of the entire OS. Focus on the System level jobs (the ones inside /Library - the system level) also remove ['failed'], non-system jobs.

EtreCheck gives a status on launchd jobs…

    [loaded]                  - a running job

[not loaded]            - jobs are not currently running, these may be harmless, but some will run 'on demand'. They may also run on a schedule.

[failed]                    - jobs in a crashed or unknown state, it could be forking processes or using all the system resources, remove these.

    User login items:

Applications and helpers that are managed inside 'Systems Preferences > Users and groups > Login Items tab'.

These are loaded at the 'User level', consider removing all of them whilst you troubleshoot.  When you decide to re-add them ensure the software is up to date.

    3rd Party Preference Panes: & Internet Plug-ins:

    /Library/PreferencePanes/ and ~/Library/PreferencePanes/

    /Library/Internet Plug-Ins/ and ~/Library/Internet Plug-Ins/

Once again these items all must be up to date, or remove them from your system. If the prefpanes manage additional software use the uninstaller or see the developers site for uninstall instructions. You can also right click to remove 3rd party preference panes in System preferences

Re-run EtreCheck after cleaning up to see if items have returned (some apps will reload the background jobs when re-opened, so either update or remove the software).

Hope that isn't too daunting, the OS should be better if there are less old items running at the system level.

Post back if you want anything clarifying.

Yes, you're right I'm the first who mentioned iMovie in this thread.

No, I don't think I'll get better attention by creating my own thread, because nobody, but only Apple can help me in this situation. It's a deep core technology.

Anyway Compressed Memory is very good technology. It really works! iMovie 10.0.2 in Mac OS 10.9 is compressing 1.5 times faster the same video files than iMovie 9.0.9 under Mac OS 10.8!

There is only one problem - incorrect work of Compressed Memory technology in Mavericks. It has to be polished as soon as posible! The whole Mavericks works like living entity now. Sometimes “Your System has Run out of Application memory”, under the same conditions, appears after compressed video file (the same 15m. Full HD -> HD) reaches 774MB, sometimes after it reaches 876MB, sometimes as soon as it reaches 987MB...and so on. Only once I've got the final 1.32GB movie file, but just only once! It looks like it's a matter of luck...

There is only one hope - update of Mavericks from Apple. Until that, I cannot use iMovie anymore.
