Q: Pages 5.0 and Endnote (Cite While You Write)

Hello fellow Endnote/Pages 5.0 Users!

I've just upgraded to Pages 5.0 yesterday to find that Endnote X7 is not really functioning properly with Pages.

I think its Pages 5.0 problem as concurrently I am running both Pages 4.3 and Pages 5.0 with same Endnote Library.  Impirting citations (to footnotes and appropriately to Bibliography) on 4.3 works perfectly, as it should.

However, on Pages 5.0, I can import citation only in-text and not in the footnotes section (chicago style with superscripts).  Further, it does not add to the Bibliography section at the last page of the document; as it did for 4.3 and Endnote.

Any takes?

This is very frustrating.

Basic? You are kidding me! LibreOffice has Bibliographies built in (and much more), unlike Pages.

Have you tried as alternatives to EndNote & BookEnds:

    Mendeley [free]

    Zotero [free]

    Jabref [free]

    Bibus [free]

Thank you for suggesting these apps.  Yes, I have tried these apps.

However, I have people who are trained in EndNote and have been using the app for years going back ot my days at Harvard.

Another issue that is not a problem for me is cost.  As a long time customer, I can upgrade at a fraction of the retail price.  We also receive research discounts.

All of that aside, I am constantly on the lookout for anything that does something faster and better than what we are using.  And, I have no hesitatoin in dithing out of an application for some legitimate purpose.  For example, we use Adobe InDesign 6 for all of our heavy lifting.

However, for our routine douments, Pages 4 works better.  Presentation quality and fromatting are vitally important to what we do.  Word does not give us the we get with InDesign.  The styles area of Pages is vastly easier to use thant Word.  So, we made the change to Pages.

I also shouldl say that I do all of my own work.  I have made a substantial investment over the years in creating templates and standards for work flows that produce results at the level of quality and design I require.  I

In addition, it is very important that we be able to move all of our work products around for differenct purposes, including publising to the web.  And, I use graphics in creating HD videos with Final Cut Pro X.

Consequently, we use a number of apps in our work.  Pages is one of them, and it is valuable for certain purposes, not everything by any means.  For my heavy lifting in writing manuscripts, I use special Word templates that I have reated.  Work does a fine job of creating TOC LOF and internal cross references.  I move back and forth between oontent and the top level TOC and LOFs in making sure my work is going the way I want it to.

Finally, another excellent app for createive writers is Scrivener.  HIghly recommended.

    I hope this is helpful.

    Yo Peter,

I have some second thought to my comments on the apps you suggested and put in some time to double check my understanding of the latest and greatest of these.  I found that Mandeley has been dramatically upgraded.  Same with Zotero.

I have someone doing a detialed side-by-side of these two apps v. Endnote 7.  I have asked that this investigation  cover uses in Word 2008 and 2001 plus Pages 4.

I will try to post back what we find.

    Again, thanks, man.

Most of these use AppleScripts so it is good you stick with Pages '09.

I was going to suggest Scrivener, but you were already hesitant about LibreOffice, so pulled my punches.

Srivener is an amazing app for writing, not just fiction and stories.  The app is really aimed at those who are writing books, but it has other uses.  For example, to shift the paradigm, think of concepts as characters.

There is a bit of a learning curve, but Scrivener has an oustanding feature set.  The developers really undeerstood the class of problems they were dealing with.

To get over the learning curve, scriver's developers have good videos and there are some on Youtube as well.

Guys, this topic is about "PAGES 5.0 AND ENDNOTE". Enough of the alternatives. There are plenty of them, but this is not the place to discuss that.

Has anyone found any problem with version 5.2 and endnote? It would be great to have a description of the bugs.

I've been holding out on upgrading to Pages 5 due to poor Endnote compatibilty... specifically the ability to choose appropriate output styles. Pages 5.2, finally, seems to have solved that problem, and appears to work well with Endnote X7. In some ways, Endnote works better with Pages 5.2 than with Pages 4 (e.g., much easier editing of existing in-text citations!). So I'm happy to be finally migrating to Pages 5 (5.2).

My setup: Endnote 7.1 and Pages 5.2 [plus Pages 4.3].

Pages 5.2 does now let citations to be placed into footnotes and endnotes. [Whereas before this was not possible]. However, there is one major flaw: the citations are all written in plain text and ignore any text formatting setup in Endnote 7.1. This is a huge problem and I'm banging my head against the wall. After Apple have seemingly worked on 'fixing' the footnote problem, the text formatting doesn't work, which, for me, leaves this enhancement useless!

Hopefully, however, this will be a simple problem to fix? Maybe it will get done by 2015?!!! In the meantime, it's back to 4.3 for me. Again.

Yes it is, because alternatives are always solutions.

There is no compulsion to use any particular software to get a job done, no matter what so many seem to think.

This is why marketers get to play so much golf. People are easily lead and once you get them on the one track you want them on, nothing much left to do, they are not going to think for themselves.

Just have to pick up the occassional independent minded strays.

Well, maybe I'm easily lead and can't think for myself. But your slur of marketeers is why FrVentura was trying to get the topic back on track. Which is focused on Endnote working [or not working] with Pages 5.

Peter, this is an apple support community forum. People read this topic because they want to know about Pages 5 and its compatibility with endnote. If one wants to know about word with mendeley, zotero, etc. I am sure that there are plenty of forums to do so, just google it.

Now lets discuss the newest Pages 5.2 and endnote. Is that asking too much?

It seems that v5.2 has improved compatibility with endnote, but there are major flaws that need be corrected, am I right? Lets find out what those flaws are and try to list them here.

    No pun intended. Greetings

    FrVentura

This is the Pages support Community. Not the Pages 5.2 forum and definitely not the EndNote forum.

EndNote is a Reuters product and very expensive.

Users just want to get their bibliographies into Pages. Most don't care what they use to do that with, but only know about the one solution, which seems to be your misunderstanding as well.

Now lets discuss how do you get your work done, and pay more attention to what is actually happening, or is that asking too much?

    Greetings.

Where was my "slur of marketeers (sic)"?

    That they play golf?

Yet another person who believes in the "one true way" to get anything done.

You just reinforced my previous point, even though you clearly did not understand what I was saying.

This thread is called "pages 5.0 and Endnote (cwyw)"

Please keep it to this. Please feel free to create a new thread called alternatives to endnote or to pages, which a lot of people will surely find useful including myself. However, when I go to a thread, I expect to read useful info about the topic mentioned in the title.

If you have decided to quit on both or either pages or endnote, please feel free not to be part of a thread discussing them. It's pretty straight forward: the title is on the top of the page. Otherwise, it's just trolling.

Now, to the topic at hand:

Pages 5.2 looks good to me so far. I don't dare to use it on my book just yet but I'm writing a paper and it works well. If anyone found problems, can you please mention them?

    Thanks a lot

You have a need to produce a document, that you can still open, with citations intact.

Seems pretty straight forward to me, but then it is obvious I haven't thought this through.
