Q: DISSOLVES WON'T HAPPEN

Good Morning,

I'm trying to do a CROSS DISSOLVE between two scenes, but for some reason when I click the edit between the scenes FCP is not allowing me to put the DISSOLVE in between them.  I've never had this problem before.  I did adjust the sound on the second clip, the one following the original clip.  but I've done that before, in the past and have had no problem.  What do Ido?

Thanks for your help.

Are you sure you have sufficient overlap on the two shots.  This overlap is called "handles."  Try this, move the second shot directly above to a higher video track.  If you want to do a one second dissolve, add 15 frames to the tail of the outgoing shot and add 15 frames to the head of the incoming shot.  There should now be a one second overlap and you can just add a one second dissolve to the incoming shot to get the equivalent of a dissolve.

Mike for some reason your reply doesn't appear in my feed.  I was able to view it in  my E Mail.  I just copied and pasted another dissolve onto the one that I was having trouble with.  See, I couldn't even HIGHLIGHT the connecting clips.  Nothing happened.  I know about adding or shaving off a clip, but for some reason this wasn't the case.  i never had this problem before.

Thanks for  your suggestion tho... Andy

Have you tried resetting your fcp preferences?

    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-2491

and I find that sometimes I have to zoom in on the timeline before I can highlight a transition.

And just to eliminate some basic things, what are your clip and sequence settings (pixel dimensions, codec)?

Another thought, your sequence might have gotten corrupted.  Try creating a new sequence with the same settings, make the old sequence active and select all and copy, then paste into the new sequence.

thank you Michael.  I redid the clip and cut 10 seconds off it and I was able to create the Dissolve.  It was just this weird thing that happened.  I appreciate you help.
