Q: No application memory left.  Getting worse and worse.  My Mac Pro is basically unusable.  I am about to go back to a PC.

I am ready to go back to a PC.  I cannot use my computer.  I have lost photos.  Can't even download from carbonite to replace lost itemsk  because of lack of application memory.  It is driving me crazy.  This computer cost too much for this kind of thing to be happening.  Mine has been happening for over a year.  I can't get answers.

Iphoto ios, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.5), OS X version 10.9.1

You are not going to believe this!  I was encrypting my external hardrive and left it to do its thing.

Suddenly I got the old application memory sign and then everything froze.  I had to shut down my whole computer with a forced quit.  I let it sit until 15 minutes ago.

By the way how do you shut down using key command?

Anyway I left the ext. drive in and restarted the computer.  A screen came up showing a screen with the drive and asking for my password.  I gave it.

A second screen came up showing me and asked for that password.  I gave it.

I opened the drive to see if it had finished encryption.  It had.

I opened the drive to see inside and it had copied everything.  So I took the time to open each and every file.  This time they were full of stuff.  And about 5 or 6 sub folders down were the carbonite files I had restored the first time....maybe a year ago.  It contained almost all of my photos!

    Yeah!

Okay...I don't see a way to disengage the hard drive with a proper closing.  It does not show in Finder.  If I right click on pad, there is no eject choice.  I even hit eject key.  Nothing.  What do I do?

See the first paragraph I posted ages ago…

Re: No application memory left.  Getting worse and worse.  ….

I think you just need to enable the option to show disks on the Desktop.

Otherwise just use the Finders 'Go' menu, select 'Computer' & then you should see all the mounted disks. You can try right clicking (or press ctrl+ click) to eject via the popup menu.

If you can't figure it out, just choose to shutdown & then unplug the disk when the Mac is totally off.

It's great news that you have your files back, well done.

Please consider buying a new disk to copy all this important files onto, I think we would all be happier knowing you have several copies of these files.

If this is the external drive, to eject the drive, drag its desktop icon to the Trash can icon in th OS X Dock to eject the entire drive

Another way to eject the hard drive is to launch the Disk Utility app. In the left pane pick the top level of your external drive and click once on the name. Pick eject or unmount in the top  right pane of the Disk Utility window.

It'a always a good idea to have a number of backups and fortunately good deals pop up occasionally. Here's one I got in the email today: Toshiba Canvio External USB 3.0 HDDs: 1TB Slim II Aluminum Portable $60 (Reg. $120), 5TB Desktop $205 (Reg. $300). Here's the link.

    $60 for a 1TB bus powered USB 3.0 isn't bad.

Okay.  I installed my new memory and as someone told me on the boards, all that memory was immediately eaten up.  It seems to be the SafariDVclient.  Because its GB grew with the increased memory.  What would happen if I used only Firefox and removed Safari?  Please tell me what the Safari DVclient is.

Do you have any advice now?

I don't think using Firefox only will help. As you can not remove Safari from an Apple system.

However, you can disable the favorite syncing...

System Preferences---> iCloud---> Uncheck the box next to Safari

That should disable the SafairDVclient. All it is, is that it syncs the favorites between your devices. After you uncheck that box. You may have to do a system restart in order for your system to calm down.

I went there and Safari is already unchecked.  Any other ideas?

Another huge draw is a kernel and there is a 0 under root.  Do you know what that means?  Can those be removed?
