Q: iPod Touch 4G Keeps Crashing Apps

I couldn't think of a title that would well enough describe my issue...

For the longest time I had no problems with my iPod Touch 4G. I will not be updating to iOS 6, will not as long as I can use this iPod; I am running 5.1.1. About a half a year ago, the Home Button got stuck down inside the device, so I had to establish Assistive Touch. I can't technically use the iPod without using Assistive Touch.

Lately, it's started to crash apps that I'm running, and have VERY LITTLE tolerance for heavy work. What I mean is, say a game is running and I accidentally hit "Tweet" instead of "Continue", it takes a moment to load the Tweet window (which I can just close to resume the game). However, it's started to crash when I do this, which it never did (I've had said app for maybe a couple weeks now). There's no update for that app right now as far as I know, but it never did it before.

That's not the only issue.

It happens when I'm browsing Safari too. Almost always will I just have one window open, and I can barely get one google search in without it crashing. I cannot try to look something up without it crashing way too frequently. This also happens with some of my larger apps, but even then they shouldn't be crashing as much - it's as if the iPod is just "giving up" under even a little bit of work.

Time for some notable specs that might help:

-I'm running iOS 5.1.1. I do not want to update.

-My iPod is a 32 GB model.

-I have 4.52 GB of "Other" space on my iPod when the iTunes window is syncing it, and this number has been like this for a little while. However, I think it was there BEFORE it started with crashing issues. I don't quite know a particular way to get rid of this, as the methods I've tried haven't worked (reset, reboot, clear all settings).

-There is 6.29 GB free on my iPod, so I don't exactly think free space is an issue...

-I have roughly 14 GB of music on my iPod, but it's never particularly crashed that besides once or twice; the others have dealt with crashing much more often. This I'm thankful for; if I couldn't play my music, I'm sure I would have flipped MUCH sooner.

I've about had it with this iPod, I can certainly go find something else that will hold my music and not give me so much trouble. If I can't use it for what I bought the system for, it gets a bit frustrating especially since nothing major is shouting out at me for WHY it isn't working. The crashing is quite frustrating. I've never had helpful answers beforehand, so I'm really hoping something will come through with this.

I don't want to buy a new iPod, but if this one is pretty much done for, I'll either save up or look into alternatives.

Please help.

Thank you.

    - Periodically double click the home button and close all the apps in the recently used dock. Then power off and then back on the iPod. This frees up memory. The 4G only has 256 MB of memory.

    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost

Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at

least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears

    - Reset all settings

Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.

All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.

I think the following will retain iOS 5.1.1 on your iPod but I am not sure.

    - Backup to iCloud and then go to Settings>General>Erase all Content and Settings

    Then restore from iCloud backup

iCloud: Restore your iOS device from iCloud

Do not update before erasing/restoring like the article says

Hi there, thank you for the feedback. Unfortunately, I've tried alll of this. Whatever is running gets closed as soon as I am done with it/it crashes, since I figured at first that was the problem (it wasn't). The reset seemed to stop for a little while, but not even a few hours later it started to lag again and the crashing started not long after. Unfortunately, I cannot restore my iPod without force-updating to iOS 6. :/

EDIT: I do have everything (minus my apps, but that's not an issue I wouldn't think) backed up to my PC, so not a lot is stored in the iCloud besides whatever automatically goes there. That's not an issue, thankfully. The problem is not being able to restore without updating. I know if I buy a new iPod I won't have a choice in updating, but if I don't have to I would strongly prefer not to.

Sounds like either corruption in the operating system. To get rid of that you will have to update since Apple only supports update when you restore.

Or you could have a hardware problem like some bad memory or storage bits.

Hmm... is there any way to figure out the problem? Or, if it IS a hardware problem, a way to fix it?

I'll have restoring/updating as my last resort.

If a hardware problem the fix is replacing the iPod

Apple will exchange your iPod for a refurbished one for $99. They do not fix yours.

hiya...I know I'm late but yea recently my lilo sis had a problem with her power button( it got jam) so she turn on the assistive touch and her ipod kept crashing too, you know the same problem like yours. It took me awhile to solve it but what I did was turn off the assistive touch and put 1 min on the auto lock. The apps stop crashing and now she doesnt have a problem. I ran into this and just wanted to share my experiences, hope you get that ipod working again, since your ipod has the broken home button instead T_T, wish you luck.

I am having the same problem. I guess it is just become obsolete as it is programmed to.

I am so not in the mood in buying the new one. Lol

Lately even the musics are jumping as if it were being played in those old record players when something bumps on it or the record is scratched. Lol

This really helped since I am also a proud iPod Touch 4 user.I've been having this problem for weeks. I can't get into a single app or anything without my device crashing. This problem is unfortunately growing, almost taking over my iPod. I believe Apple just wants to make the iPod touch 4 extinct, therefore making people buy the newer version. There are some serious issues going on involving the iPod Touch 4 in the tech community. Also if you had noticed they didn't release IOS 7 for the iPod Touch 4. As a iPod user and an committed Apple customer, I feel Apple is really letting iPod users down.
