    Hello all;

The primary problem here is that Microsoft doesn't view IMAP as a current email protocol that they want to continue on with. This was stated during Ballmer's reign at the head of Microsoft. Outlook.com and Hotmail currently do NOT use the exchange protocol for desktop clients. With the new CEO there is a very real possibility this will be resolved in the near term future.

I've also noticed that there seems to be certain rights users are allotted depending on how long they've had their Hotmail accounts. For example when Entourage existed I was able to setup my Hotmail as a full account, my roommate, however, was not able to do this. I've had my Hotmail account since the late 90s, and seem to be able to do a lot more with it than people who have recently signed up for an account.

The solution I offered is not as eloquent as I'd like, and I've been having a few syncronization issues between my two laptops, however this is allowing me to check my email fairly quickly.

Microsoft debuted Imap as a protocol for all email accounts using the .live servers (Hotmail, Live, Outlook.com) about 4 months ago (maybe 5)

I think your information is out of date.

Whoop, yep it looks like it was out of date. They made IMAP available as of September 12, 2013. I found a website that has all the settings information on it, the IMAP settings are in the middle of the article.

I know, and you had many settings wrong (read my replies back then)

If you have not changed them then that is what is wrong!

    Good luck, I'm out.

    All,

Have you set uo an oulook.com alias for your hotmail account so you can use outlook.com?

I am just in the middle of doing this and so will report back, go to your hotmail account.

then go to settings then setup an outlook.com alias, they then email you back when the oulook.com alias is ready, which took about ten minutes

    Cheers,

    Al

Ok, so according to the Genius Bar, all my settings are correct. Now, I have managed to download all my Hotmail folders EXCEPT for my Inbox which I know is the largest folder of all. All the other folders were downloaded after a couple of days.

With my Inbox I have tried waiting for 2 days but nothing seems to be downloading. The only email in my inbox is a test email I sent to myslef in the apple store. I don't know how that one email managed to download because it hasnt worked since. Also, in the apple store the activity screen it showed me that 15000 emails from my inbox needed to be downloaded so information was available. But at home,  when I go to the activity screen it looks like this and hasnt changed for two days. Not sure what to do now?Screen Shot 2014-04-12 at 07.39.31.png

Take your Mac to a different location (different network) and test it, if (as in the Apple Store) mail starts to download you have a network problem, if it doesn't post back.

    and

Post the complete settings you are using here (obscure your email address)
