If you are referring to AirPlay Mirroring, it is not compatible with the MacBook > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5404 It needs an Early 2011 or newer MacBook Pro or a Mid 2011 or newer MacBook Air, and OS X Mountain Lion or Mavericks.

If you are referring to AirPlay, make sure that your Apple TV (or the device you want to use AirPlay with) and your Mac are in the same network.

Both models of MacBook4.1 (13-inch Early and Mid 2008)

are considered Vintage when running Mavericks 10.9.2.

This means certain aspects of the hardware do not meet

system requirements for the software to run on them.

AirPlay, iCloud, and other things found varying support

or lack thereof, between Lion, Mt Lion, and Mavericks.

So it appears the Vintage stature affects yours this way.

There may be detailed Support article topics about this subject

among the OS X section: http://www.apple.com/support/osx/

And I know I've read about this issue, as one based in hardware.

    Good luck & happy computing!
