Apr 9, 2014 10:43 AM in response to critter.igmcby mende1,I use a HP printer with my iMac and I do not have any issue related to connectivity and printing, so my advice is to get a HP printer, although there are other brands which make printers compatible with OS X. You have the full list in this site > http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3669

Apr 9, 2014 11:10 AM in response to critter.igmcby John Galt,Nearly all "all-in-one" or multifunction devices will work with a Mac, but I recommend purchasing one from a company that visibly supports OS X.
In my opinion Brother and Canon are both good choices, followed rather distantly by Epson. Others are simply not worth considering.
Wireless all-in-one devices are convenient and cost about the same as USB-only ones. Consider AirPrint compatibility for future needs. Refer to this list of AirPrint compatible Brother printers and multifunction devices.
Recently I have grown to favor Brother printers over the others. They are inexpensive, their OS X integration is well-implemented, their consumables are reasonably priced, and their technical support is free forever. If you need to call them and explain that you have a Mac, you will immediately receive competent assistance.
I have grown to dislike HP printers, for all the above reasons.
Read user reviews from vendor websites - Amazon is a good place to start, since Amazon lets people write almost anything they want... right, wrong, or completely idiotic.
Read the reviews on the respective manufacturers' websites as well, but consider the likelihood of them deleting negative reviews.
Process all those user reviews employing your own common sense, and draw your own conclusions.

Apr 9, 2014 4:15 PM in response to critter.igmcby Mark Piaskiewicz1,I’m currently using an HP OfficeJet Pro 8600 series printer. I’ve had it for a couple years and have no complaints other than the cost of the ink. Air Print is a wonderful thing.
Having said that, if I had it all to do over again, I’d get an Air Print compliant laser printer. Monochrome, but the toner lasts forever. The HP replaced a Brother MFC 6800 that I bought reconditioned back around the turn of the century. A fantastic printer, it just didn’t support Air Print. It’s the best printer I ever owned, with the possible exception of my ImageWriter II.

Apr 10, 2014 5:23 AM in response to critter.igmcby a brody,My Canon Pixma MX700 I've had no issues with since Mac OS X 10.4 on an iMac G5. It smoothly migrated from PowerPC to Intel. If you have a need to use older Macs, you may want to find one that the drivers are listed for as many operating systems as possible on the manufacturer's website.

You can still use your ImageWriter with your Mac, if you are so inclined:
Apple ImageWriter printer installation in OS X
You can even use one of several workarounds to print on an ImageWriter from an iPad.
Most older printers were built to last, unlike the disposable junk built today. My Apple LaserWriters still work too. Of course they cost over $10,000 in today's dollars.

Apr 10, 2014 6:45 AM in response to critter.igmcby Barry Hemphill,As you will have noticed, there is no "best printer." Most of us have used several manufacturer's devices and have opinions. I suggest you research brands by searching web sites. Bottom line, the "best" printer is the one that has the functions you need at a price you consider fair.
Barry
P.S. I currently use an Epson all-in-one and like it. I have also used several HP printers and found them to be OK as well.

Jun 20, 2014 9:39 AM in response to critter.igmcby Printer Paul,I have had the Brother Work Smart All-in-One for about a year now and it is the best printer and scanner I have ever had. I would highly recommend Brother.
