Apr 11, 2014 11:16 PM in response to Judy Nielsenby Allan Jones,According to this page:
http://www.syniumsoftware.com/macfamilytree/
That application cannot run on any eMac--the subjec tof this forum area. Family Tree requires a min Mac OS of 10.7 and the last eMacs could run no higher than 10.5.8. Also, the last eMac was discontined nine years ago.
Can you please clarify what kind fo Mac you have???

Apr 12, 2014 10:37 AM in response to Judy Nielsenby BDAqua,Hi Judy,
Open console in Applications>Utilities, check the system log for the date/time of the last problem & the Startup right after that for clues.
click on the top line we want, Shift plus click on the bottom line we want, CMD+c to copy, then paste the text in a reply with CMD+v
A few dozen lines should be about right, hundreds or thousands won't likely be readable.
Also in Console look for crash logs for Family Tree.

To day I tried to add a new user. Then the app seems to work, but why it does not work with the old username. I do not understand it.Sorry my bad english. -
Apr 12, 2014 12:58 PM in response to Judy Nielsenby BDAqua,I was next going to recommend trying a new user, so good work on your part!
Look in /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/ to see if Family Tree has a plist we can copy before deleting then logging out & back in to test if that helps.

Apr 13, 2014 8:06 AM in response to Judy Nielsenby Allan Jones,Judy, We still do not know anything about your Mac other than it is running OS10.7 and is not an eMac. There is a way for you to safely allow us to look for problem programs but will also precisely identify what Mac you have.
Please download and install this free utility:
http://www.etresoft.com/etrecheck
It is secure and written by one of our most valued members to allow users to show details of their computer's configuration In Apple Support Communities without revealing any sensitive personal data.
Run the program and click the "Copy report to clipboard" button when it displays the results. Then return here and paste the report into a response to your initial post. It can often show if any harmful files/programs are dragging down your performance or causing other programs to fail.
PS: Your English is fine!

Apr 13, 2014 9:25 AM in response to Judy Nielsenby Allan Jones,Dear Judy,
I am a person born with a bit of skepticism, and i am not interested in supplying data from my computer to strangers, but I believe in you. Lol......
Me too! Thta's why, when Etrecheck became available, I tried hard to find the words asking people to use it without increasing their already elevated stress level.
Well, Etrecheck has told us quite a story. We now know you have an iMac, not an eMac, that is the late 2009 model. And I immediatedly see two huge probelms:
1) You have MacKeeper, a terrible product that the United Space Command should declare scamware and burn with fire. It adds nothing and takes away performance.
http://www.thesafemac.com/beware-mackeeper/
2) You've managed to pick up the Genieo adware/scamware, sometimes slightly apprent but not properly so on some download pages. Carefuilly read these removal instructions:
http://www.thesafemac.com/arg-genieo/
You have to remove this way because Genieo's removal tool cleverly leaves some bits behind.
You also have f-secure antivirus. I'm not familiar with that particular product but most packages of that type are not needed on a fully updated Mac OS (yours can run OS10.9) and often degrade perforamnce or block/delete important files. That could be causing your Family Tree issues. Try at least diabling f-secure and testing for stability.
But you have to get rid of Mackeeper and Genieo first. Once you have removed them, please run another etrecheck report so we can see what else is at play.
Thanks for hanging it here!

Apr 13, 2014 10:41 AM in response to Judy Nielsenby Allan Jones,★HelpfulDear Judy,
I don't remember I have installed Genio.
Most people don't. It is hidden amongst what most people would consider to be innocuous downloads. Sites like Softonic, CNET, and download.com are among the guilty who hide adware. This can commonly be avoided by working your way back to the original developer's site to get a file, avoiding the sites that feature masses of downloadable content for every program imaginable. When I post a link to a program or utility, I always make sure I have the developer's site linked, not the "we have it all" sites.
Mackeeper - maybe.
Mackeeper is hyped all over the internet. The trial version is very easy to install thinking it's a safe file.To get the full version you have to actually pay for it.
F-Secure looks like a legit antivirus package--the Safe Mac site gives it high scores for detecting viruses but does not specify if the program drags performance down.
The bottom line is that, as the Mac OS gains market share through people switching from Windows, the AV developers who got started by developing Windows products have used something close to scare tactics to make switchers think the Mac is just and vulnerable as Windows.
The other problem is that many of those products will not pick up the scamware/adware stuff, which are about the only concerns that affect Mac users at this point.
When you treat a Mac like it is a Windows computer, it runs like one!
Take your time with this. I suspect you may need hands-on help which we can't do through the Apple forums. Consider contacting a Mac Users' Group (MUG) in your area to see if someone nearby is willing to help you at no charge. You can find a MUG here:
