I don't know what Emoji app you're referring to. What version of OS X are you running (you listed 10.5.8, that can't be right if you have the Mac App Store)? In recent versions of OS X, you can press Control + Command + Space and select Emoji from the left sidebar to access a variety of emoticons.

When you open it, does the little emoji face show up on your task bar next to the clock? If so, then when you are in Mail, and want to use one, click on the emoji face, pick a category, pick an emoticon, then click on it to put it in the email you are composing.

I tried that but it does not go into the letter I am writing.  I have this on my i-pad and i-phone , this is stumping me.

Sorry - not understanding. Your post is for the Mac app store, and you refer to the Dock. If your issue is not with the Mac, then you need to resubmit your question in the correct forum and supply all of the information concerning your issue....
