I don't remember exactly what version it was. It had not been updated for a long period of time. And now I have my adobe softwares on it and I'm afraid I will lose them. They are v expansive. It's mac laptop.

That should launch the Startup Manager window. See if you can select your startup disk then click Restart.
if the startup disk is not available, it's likely the hard drive has failed.

May 1, 2014 4:41 AM in response to Carolyn Samitby a brody,Carolyn, not necessarily true. The directory can be bad and the Startup Manager won't be able to see the hard disk either. Also the system bootable files may have been damaged. This is why I always recommend users look at my data recovery FAQ before considering the drive has failed, if they don't have a backup:
