Q: Why did Mavericks slow down my MBP?

Did some digging in Discussions and found that a slow-down problem is common after installing Mavericks.

EtreCheck was recommended as a diagnostic first step. I have  a report but I am not confident to act on any items without advice. Here it is - help appreciated.

    That is strange: did you download by clicking SoftwareUpdate in the AppleMenu?

    Your MBP 5,5 should already have FW1.7 !!

    Did you check in Applications/Utilities/SystemInformation directly right of the hardware section:

    in there you see Macbook Pro 5,5  and  Firmware version  MBP55.00AC.B03 (EFi1.7) !!

    The only thing you have to do is a SMC reset, when you think there is a fallen bit in the EFi.

    It was all in the links that Eric Root gave you.

    You do not have to install that EFi.

    btw:  did you already uninstall the akamai?

    Just throwing this in the mix. I upgraded to Mavericks on a mid-2010 27" iMac. Seemed to slow me down a bit, even after going through all the other troubleshooting steps. Putting in more RAM made a world of difference.

    Your MBP can be upgraded to 8 GB. Might be worth putting in some more RAM.

    In Mavericks the Ram is handled very different than older OS. From the Ertrecheck list (copy of Activity Monitor) it is clear that he has enough Ram.  But more can never hurt.

    Addition: if you click it while holding CTL, you choose 'open' then again 'open': it will tell you that your MBP don't need it.

    Great, use it. Restart and empty the trash afterwards.

    Come back with a new etrecheck list to see if the uninstaller did everything.

    4 GB RAM is fine for Mavericks by itself. You may need more depending on what software you use and what OS version you were using before. The primary exmple of this is Photoshop which pretty much everyone reports as running much better with 8 GB RAM whereas it ran fine with only 4 GB before.

    Any OS virtual memory system is really little more than an attempt to fake out applications to prevent them from consuming all resources on a machine. As applications make advances and find ways around virtual memory, OS vendors like Apple have to make their own advanced in the Cold War of Memory to stay ahead. Each side is lying to the other about what it needs and what it provides. Depending on which side wins each battle, either your apps may crash and/or slow down. There is no peace on the horizon.

    Lex;

    Here is my report after following your instructions. See anything else? iStat, red warnings to pay attention to? If I need to uninstall further is S/W on App Store OK to use?

    Thanks very much;

    Bruce-

    Check this out, from your report:

    The IconServicesAgent in your Mavericks is using a *ridiculously HIGH* amount of memory, Bruce. Like.... HUH? 152 MEGS for icon services?? And, I'd bet, using an excessively high amount of CPU time, too.

    Just for testing purposes, I'd suggest firing up Activity Monitor now & kill the "com.apple.IconServicesAgent" process.

    (Command-Spacebar  | Type in "act" & press Enter)

    Wait a second after doing that though..... sometimes processes are made to be persistent & they'll pop right back in.

    And my HUNCH is, seeing that you *STILL* have iStat pieces in your Mavericks (after I'd posted days ago here that you need to dump ALL that iStat stuff, remember?), my hunch is that iStat, being a **dynamically-changing**  menu item [hinthint.... gotta take CPU time to do that for all the numerous system & hardware items iStat constantly monitors. And RAM.], is the culprit due to your IconServicesAgent memory-hogging (or, if you have in fact already run your iStat uninstaller, then the remaining vampirish iStat RAM & CPU-sucking bits & pieces left behind are causing the problems, despite the actual app not existing on your HDD anymore).

    My 2¢:

    1. Kill the com.apple.IconServicesAgent" process, see what happens with your Mavericks, speed-wise.

    2. Dump all things iStat!

    THE ISTAT AUTOMAGIKAL UNINSTALLER *DOES NOT* REMOVE *ALL* OF ITS OWN INSTALLED AND/OR CREATED-AFTER-RUNNING-ISTAT SYSTEM FILES!  And yes, those leftovers DO CAUSE PROBLEMS in Mavericks.

    Mavericks DOES NOT PLAY NICE with iStat, Bruce. They bump heads, BIG TIME. Been there, done that. I was having *all kinds* of weird stuff going on with my newly-installed Mavericks for many, many hours. Then, after some research & some deductive reasoning, I swept my Mac's Mavericks completely (and I mean *completely*) clean of all iStat stuff using EasyFind. I tried the iStat uninstaller first, rebooted, nothing changed. Still problems. I had to use EasyFind to find the left-behind iStat vampire files. Dumped them all. Rebooted, weird stuff going on & weird problems were gone!

    In EasyFind, use the search keywords "istat" and "bjango."  And be sure that you're starting the search from the base root level of your harddrive/OS.

    Good luck to ya Bruce!  Take heart though... You'll get it speedy again, eventually.

    KK
