Q: I just updated to Mavericks and now I can't use my iPhoto pictures as my screensaver.  Any help is welcome.  Thanks!

I would like to use some of my iPhoto pictures as a screensaver, but when I go to screensaver and select 'choose folder', there is no little triangle beside iPhoto library.

MacBook Pro, OS X Mavericks (10.9.2)

Did you also upgrade iPhoto? There's an updated version for OS X Mavericks.

Be aware that you may want to save your iPhoto Library prior to updating iPhoto in case you ever want to go back to an OS X version prior to Mavericks. The iPhoto app update will upgrade the iPhoto Library DB for Mavericks.

I didn't upgrade iPhoto on my own - just if it did it automatically when I got Mavericks.  How do I save my iPhoto Library?  And then how do I upgrade iPhoto? Thanks!

    To save your iPhoto Library:

Open Finder then your Pictures folder. Your iPhoto Library should be in there.

Create a new folder called something like Old iPhoto Library within your Pictures folder.

Copy your iPhoto Library into your new folder.

    To upgrade iPhoto:

    Open App Store.

Go to the Purchases tab and see if there is an update for iPhoto in there.

ok - I think I'm doing it - it's copying my pictures now.  The app store said the newer iPhoto version is $14.99. - it's not free, huh?

It should be free if you already had iPhoto on your system.

Ok - now i've got a folder with my iPhoto library in it.  My iPhoto says it's iPhoto '09 version 8.1.2 (424).  I found many iPhoto updates - not sure which one to use.  I just downloaded one of the first ones - iPhoto 9.4.3, an update for iPhoto 9.  It didn't do anything...  Any ideas?  Thanks!

This screenshot shows which previous versions of iPhoto are compatible with Mavericks.  It also indicates which versions qualify for a free upgrade to iPhoto 9.5.1 and which require a purchase:

Note 1every day more users are reporting problems with iPhoto 8.1.2 so I've included it in the non compatible category.

Note 2:  If your previous version of iPhoto was iPhoto 7 (08) or earlier you'll need to download and run the iPhoto Library Upgrader 1.1application on the library before opening it with iPhoto9.5.1.
