Q: Update to Mavericks?

I am thinking about updating to Mavericks from Snow Leopard 10.6.8 . I don't use a lot of third party software, Quark I do use and it is version 8.5.1 - their site isn't tell me if compatible, does anyone know if that is compatible with Mavericks? I mainly just use this for internet so will I have any issues doing the upgrade? Also, I did a test on Lion a long time ago and now have a split drive with 2 partitions (I don't really know much about this but was told to do this for the test). I "never" use the Lion portion so want to get rid of it and get back to one partition. How would I do this and can I just upgrade without transferring all the software back and forth, etc.? I just want to do the upgrade, remove the 2 partitions and make it one, without having to reinstall all software, etc., is that possible? I know Quark has issues when I have to reinstall because need all kinds of codes, etc. Also, I have Verizon FiOS and print wirelessly so will all that work the same after this is done? Can anyone tell me exactly what to do to get this to one partition and upgrade without a major reinstall of all software - any help is appreciated. THANKS!

Quark says it's not: Important message BEFORE upgrading to OS X Mavericks - Quark Forums

I had no "issues" with upgrading to Mavericks, or after.

Folks that have "issues" usually have bad/old/incompatible software/hardware that doesn't play well with Mavericks, for example:

    1. any third party "utilities" like MacKeeper, CleanMyMac, or similar dreck
    2. third party antivirus software
    3. Blackberry software
    4. anything from Google (Google Drive, Chrome, etc.)
    5. WD hard drives

I just want to do the upgrade, remove the 2 partitions and make it one, without having to reinstall all software, etc., is that possible?

Yes. Using Disk Utility you would delete the Lion partition and then resize the SL partition. See Recombine Partitions on Mac | SkimFeed.com

without having to reinstall all software, etc., is that possible?

Most of the apps you are using with SL are going to have to be updated to work with Mavericks, and thus you will need to download and install updated versions.

Also, I have Verizon FiOS and print wirelessly so will all that work the same after this is done?

FiOS works with Mavericks (I'm a FiOS customer too). Whether your printer will still work with Mavericks is another matter. It will depend on whether your printer and its Wifi capabilities are Mavericks compatible. Check on your printer manufacturer's website to see if it is. This information can be very difficult to figure out from the printer manufacturer's website, however. If it does not explicitly say that the printer is Mavericks compatible I would not assume that it is. Printer manufacturers do not go out of their way to support their printers with new operating systems, especially if the printer is a few years old. This is how they encourage you to buy a new printer (it would seem that this would encourage you to buy a printer from somebody else, but these corporate types are not Rhodes scholars). There are some options (like generic print drivers, Gutenprint, and AirPrint) if your printer is no longer supported. If your printer is still supported under Mavericks, then most likely when you install Mavericks, the new drivers that you will need for printing and/or scanning will be automatically available via Software Update.

Can anyone tell me exactly what to do to get this to one partition and upgrade without a major reinstall of all software - any help is appreciated. THANKS!

See the answer above regarding the partitions and resizing.

For the upgrade, especially if you are going to upgrade from 10.6.8, a clean install would be a good idea:

    1. figure out your compatibility issues and decide whether you want to upgrade your apps too.
    2. run disk utility and repair your hard drive and permissions.
    3. do a complete backup of your old system.
    4. unplug your peripherals
    5. download the Mavericks installer
    6. reboot in safe mode (restart and hold down shift)
    7. run the installer
    8. install your apps
    9. copy your documents over from your backup

My advice is that you partition your hard drive and install Mavericks into there and then "dual-boot" into Mavericks and experiment with it.

DO NOT install Mavericks over Snow Leopard, as it will completely obliterate it and unless you have a clone or Time Machine backup, it will be difficult and much work to reinstall.

Since your experience is with Snow Leopard, there is a good chance that you might still be using older PowerPC software that will run natively in Snow Leopard, but will fail to run in Mavericks.  Dual-booting will give you the alternative to continue to access this software as needed.

    Hi Gary,

actually Quark says QuarkXPress 8 is not supported under Mavericks. That does not mean it will not run. We actually have several customers reporting that v8 runs without issues on Mavericks, others report minor issues.

"Not supported" basically means that Quark doesn't test this combination and will also not provide any fixes to make it run in case it doesn't. So it might not run and it might run. In any case you are running this combination at your own risk and you should test this combination yourself before using it in production.

Hope that clarifies it. That said, we of course welcome you to upgrade QuarkXPress 9 or 10, both are supported under Mavericks. By the way, we have a promo currently available that give you both, v9 and v10, for one bundle price (QuarkXPress 9 is good to have, as it opens files form v3.1 and higher, whereas v10 is Cocoa-native and opens files from v7 and higher).

    Regards
    Matthias

Oh my, please help. I got brave today and decided to update my 2nd partition which was the testing of Lion I did for apple a couple of years ago. I rebooted into the Lion partition and downloaded Mavericks to update and selected "Lion" and did the upgrade (and Quark seems to work fine), but when I went back to my Snow Leopard - IT APPEARS TO BE IN MAVERICKS ALSO???? I wanted that to remain in Snow Leopard so nothing changed. I went to send an email and went into Mail and it said was downloading mail files of like 2,000 files and when done said can't connect to Mail can't connect to the account ---------------. Please enter the password for ----------------, and it is already there but I put it in again and now I have none of my mail files except some for 3-4 years ago and can't even get mail. The password I am sure is my password for my computer...All accounts offline and can't take online. Oh please can someone tell me how to get those files back. And why did Snow Leopard upgrade also? When in Snow Leopard I still show 2 icons on desktop, one for Lion and one for Snow Leopard and I was in the Lion partition and said to update Lion, now Snow Leopard. I didn't backup my snow leopard today (did about a month ago), because wasn't touching that and hadn't used Lion forever so didn't care if that was upgraded. My forms and pictures all seem to be there. When in Snow Leopard and go to apple to About this Mac says OS X Version 10.9.3, Startup Disk Lion??? I really need to get my mail files...can I import mailboxes from somewhere and if so how do I do that? Man, I am so lost right now and need some help bad. Thanks and hopefully someone can help me!

OK, I did figure out Mail - contacted FiOS and was using the wrong password. And I was able to import my old saved mailboxes from mail library...so only lost about 10 emails I had saved in my main folder. Now my question is do I have Mavericks? When I go to Apple About This Mac it says 10.9.3 and boot Disk Lion - I am booted under my old Snow Leopard account. Also, my other issue right now is my bookmarks in Safari, they are an older set and not my most updated set...how do I get my bookmarks back. Also confusing to me is I have two hard drives when I am in the supposedly old Snow Leopard. One says Lion and one says Snow Leopard. When I go to the split blue face at the top of my toolbar, It says snow Leopad but no Lion is shown there...so I am just confused if I have Mavericks or not? Do I remove everything that says Lion or Snow Leopard on my desktop or will that remove the split blue face in my toolbar that says Snow Leopard when I open it? When I open that blue (I called it the finder) box at the top (i have the toolbar on the left side) and if I click on Snow Leopard it shows all my applications, users, home, private, setup, etc. and under users is all by really important stuff so I want to be sure not to lose that. But also under favorites it shows "all my files, airdrop, garyschnetter (which is the user's folder basically I see under Snow Leopard also), desktop, applications, documents". Can I just remove Snow Leopard folder and will I keep the users info...sure don't want to lose that so am asking since I didn't intend to upgrade to Mavericks on Snow Leopard but did when I told it to upgrade Lion only. Any help truly appreciated.

So sorry but now I am even more confused. I swear I rebooted using Snow Leopard, just did it again and found Snow Leopard is still intact with all my emails and old bookmarks...so what the h---- is going on? So did I set up another mail account in Mavericks 10.9.3 because this time I am on 10.6.8 in SnowLeopard. I restarted and signed in again. Once I did some swivel thing in the top right corner when I was in Mavericks...does that not swivel you to Snow Leopard if you select that? Am going to try going back to Lion (Mavericks again) - now I think I have email in both programs. Should I just install Mavericks over the top of Snow Leopard since it appears Quark was working OK when I was in that and there are not many other apps I use???????????????? I need superman to come to the rescue and tell me what I need to do...coronary going on here...ha!

And now when I "reboot" into Lion it says under Apple menu 10.6.8 yet and startup disk Snow Leopard. So what have I done, can anyone tell me? I have no idea what I just spent 2 hours doing with FiOS support updating my emails etc., because it isn't configured wherever I am here now? I rebooted twice. I have one partition called GarySchnetter and one called gsnicker. gsnicker should be lion/mavericks and garyschnetter is Snow Leopard. Now rebotting and selecting either - they are both Snow Leopard yet. I will quit replying until someone can help me...just too confused. Where did i Install Mavericks at, how do I get to it - I swear I was in it and it said Boot Disk Lion and 10.9.3 but now it is no where to be found. And I worked with FiOS to find those old email files and set that up in Mavericks (I thought). Thanks for the long reads and my stupidity/confusion is frustrating...
