Same here (Germany) .. first time experienced this with my ATV1(f/w 3.0.2) today.

    - sluggish UI

    - iTunes Store not accessible from ATV, just have access to the previews (and yes.. port 443 is open)

    - local playback stuttering massively

    - (after factory reset) .. after re-syncing with iTunes/PC it looks like the list of movies/series/.. in the main view on the ATV is coming and going.. flickering, scrolling/navigation impossible

Coincidently had to re-install my PC days ago and initially thought I had screwed up something with the iTunes install on the PC (hooked up with my ATV).

Spent more than half a day now (before reading this) trying to fix things, including multiple times (factory)re-setting my ATV.

Hey Apple.. some notification about some severe thing happening or what ever is currently going on would be very nice!

Btw.. every time I factory-resetted my ATV it seems to download stuff for an hour or so from Akamai.. although the ATV is not even assigned yet to an iTunes account or so.  (wonder why..)

    Best

Strangely, my Apple tv just froze completely so I unplugged the power source from the back of the Apple tv unit.  The Apple tv has started to work properly again -- I am watching a tv episode purchased from iTunes.  Not sure if it will last, as this glitch has happened to me before and recurred.

    Hi

Definitely not our hardware or software. Rebooted, re- installed etc. Called apple who said my hardware was probably faulty but ran diagnostics which said it was working perfectly.

Switched off the internet and it worked perfectly. This is apple's doing.

I suggest that everyone makes a big fuss so they stop bricking Apple TV and denying that they are doing it.

Thank you all for the support..I would have been trying to fix this for days

I have the same problem since yesterday.  I restore all my network and apple tv1 to factory default settings and started an overal reconfig but had no luck getting the apple tv back to the way it worked for the last 6 years.

I have read all the prevoius comments and my problem is the same and some of you have detailed the problems very well.  Apple needs to take action now if they want to keep their customers happy.  Before I upgrade to an apple tv 3rd gen I will research all the options out there.

    Hey y'all,

I just had my last post deleted - so I guess Apple are actively reading this thread.

Just like to add my name to this list.

2 ATV1 (silver box) running 3.0.2 firmware. If I unplug my cable modem and then reset the Apple TVs, everything works great but have no access to Apple's servers. As soon as I plug my cable modem back in and the unit can access the internet, menus start blinking out, slow UI response and serious stuttering during video playback.

Seems like a memory leak whenever they are trying to communicate with Apple's servers. It gets so bogged down trying to request data from Apple that the whole unit chokes.

Bought a second (cheap) access point that does not have access to the Internet and associated both Apple TVs and my PC (through a second ethernet port) with with it. Everything works great like this, just unable to access iTunes Store or Youtube.

    Hopefully this gets resolved soon!

Yep, figured that was their reasoning but I didn't threat to sue, just raised a suggestion.

I can watch movies without any freezing if I turn my internet off but as soon as I turn my internet back on My Movies are unwatchable and movies on my external HDD freeze pretty badly.

My question is: How can this be possible?

    Hi Joshua,

Just found in my inbox where Apple did notify me they had removed my post. I guess I can see why they did, although I wasn't trying to be threatening; hence, my re-worded posts above - just got carried away with the frustration of what is happening.

    Regards,

    Neil

I can certainly understand the frustration. It is really irritating how a loss of a connection to Apple's servers completely criples the 1st-gen Apple TV. My best guess is that it is constantly trying to re-connect to Apple's servers to the point that it eats the majority of the CPU cycles which causes the sluggish UI and horrible video playback. Seems like something they should fix so that the attempt to connect to Apple isnt stuck in a while loop. Assuming that is even the problem at all.

    Interesting, Joshua.

If that is what is happening, then this could be chewing up users' internet downloads. I should disconnect all my other devices from the network and see if there is still internet traffic. If so, we'd be better off to disconnect our ATV or remove the wifi connection. Apple might therefore consider doing something to stop the constant connecting so the non-iTunes related software can have precedence - or until a fix is found, at least produce an update which gives processing priority to non-iTunes related processes.

    Regards,

    Mitchysa

Well if they removed your post it means they are monitoring this thread, which means that they are aware of this issue. Which in turn means they cannot hide behind ignorance.

Hopefully a fix is in the works. Just wish they would chime in to say so if that is the case.
