Apr 18, 2014 3:29 PM in response to reicolaby georgevargas,Thank you for the information regarding the ATV 2nd Gen. We have heard a bit more about the ATV2 but not much on ATV 3rd gen. Please state if you are having an issue with the ATV 3 and if you are still under warranty what phone support is saying about it.
KeithAMoore and Adambard,
Please ley us know if you do reach Apple support and what they say. One other thread here mentions Apple Customer Support being intentionally vague and evasive pretty much expressing they are unaware of a world wide issue and stating it is the user hardware failing...at the same time the ATV failed for users in Germany, Japan, New Yourk City, Boston, Canada, Australia, Korea, Spain, Philadelphia, India, one of the moons of Mars (Phobos I think).
The twitter idea is a pretty good one. Not sure how to go about it. Please explain. Those of you that have completed a factory restore on your ATV1: Does it restore to Software 1.0 or 2.0 and what is your experience upgrading to 3.0.2? Does it update normally or is it taking an hour or longer? If it restores normally then it appears it is able to connect to the Apple server and is intentionally blocked form the Apple Store.

Apr 18, 2014 3:38 PM in response to georgevargasby eros@sa,ATV 1st gen. Australia .tried software update and It said was up to date. Did factory restore which deleted all my stuff and then it told me to update. It updated quickly and It's now 3.0.1 and it's still stuffed. !!

Apr 18, 2014 3:41 PM in response to eros@saby georgevargas,Any reason why it did not update to 3.0.2?

Apr 18, 2014 3:48 PM in response to georgevargasby noelfromact,Apple TV Gen 1, 40GB.
Can't remember whether it restored to 1.0 or 2.0 but it did so normally and I could see movie trailers listed but didn't think to access them. Upgrade to 3.02 was normal, completed in minutes.
Apart from no access to the iTunes store, what now happens with mine is that immediately I try to play a movie or music track the ATV initiates a lot of network traffic that seems to slow it down and cause the playback problems. The traffic won't stop until I either turn the modem off or put the ATV in standby. Don't know why it is generating that traffic. Turning off the modem and thereby preventing the ATV from accessing the internet temporarily fixes the playback problem until I turn the modem back on, exit music and go back in again when the same thing happens. I'm not playing iTunes store bought music, just my own cd collection. No issue with YouTube. With a workaround I can also stream Internet radio stations without problem but they don't show up as they originally did.

Apr 18, 2014 3:54 PM in response to eros@saby georgevargas,Dude,
I'd hate to use you as a guinea pig, but I would really love to know if you have this problem on your ATV3 and if you have phone support for your ATV3. Please phone Apple Customer Support if your ATV3 is still under warranty/phone support and tell us what they have to say. Refer them to this thread!!!!

Apr 18, 2014 4:38 PM in response to IrvBdby The_German,I see the AppleTV (first gen) trying to connect to the content server at Akamai via https but not liking the response, and then retrying over and over again. I'm seeing some 300 connections between the Apple TV and the same host on Akamai's side. I assume this causes te AppleTV to appear sluggish as it churns through the connections.
As has been widely publized, Akamai botched their fix for the Heartbleed vulnerability, and ended up installing new certificates everywhere. It's not far fetched that the issues we're seeing are related to this.
Apple isn't going to throw their content delivery partner under the bus, so they are deliberately vague.

Apr 18, 2014 4:39 PM in response to IrvBdby ShakeGuy,I wonder if this is Heartbleed related? Maybe Apple just discovered Apple TV Gen 1 are all vulnerable?
I'll give them the benefit of the doubt but if this turns out to be switching off our service to make us buy newer hardware then it'll send a strong message to me that I should look elsewhere for my entertainment delivery. There are plenty of options now.

Apr 18, 2014 4:40 PM in response to The_Germanby ShakeGuy,You beat me to it. Sounds plausible that it is Heartbleed.

Apr 18, 2014 4:47 PM in response to The_Germanby noelfromact,Re: Akamai Server
Thanks v much for the info.
That all makes sense and matches the symptoms.
I thought this was happening when I actually played a music or video file but I can see now that it starts the moment I navigate to any of the menu items that previously allowed access to the iTunes store.

Apr 18, 2014 5:21 PM in response to IrvBdby gd4111,I have two Gen 1 Apple TVs. They have worked great for 4-5 years now. Tonight, we're trying to rent a movie. As indicated in this thread - it does not work anymore. Have rebooted - no luck. The kids are not happy we cannot rent a movie. Apple, please fix this, else we'll have to get another brand box.
