Q: iOS 7.1 Personal Hotspot APN settings won't save on iPhone 4

Hello,

I am facing a problem, which would be great to resolve. Since I updated to iOS 7.1 I can't set APN setttings for Personal Hotspot in my iPhone. If I go to Settings -> Cellular -> Cellular Data Settings, and I set the APNs(for data+mms) and i go back to save the freshly set APN settings then it saves, but if I touch any fields in the "Personal Hotspot" section (even focusing) and I go back the same way any changed value won't save (e.g. I also change data APN). In the menu "Cellular" there is an option for personal tethering where it just keeps loading and after a ehile it becomes an available option, but if I click on it it displays an error message like: "...contact: Carrier". So I tried everything, I reset my network settings, did 3 full restore(via iTunes, in recovery mode and DFU too). Then finally I downgraded to iOS 6.1.2 and guess what, it started working.. Then I thought it repaired some settings bug which burned in my device and I restored 7.1 in DFU. Now it is not working again. I need the help of community since I need hotspot tethering so hard everyday for my job. Thanks in advance!

I have finally found a solution that works for me.

To use my iphone (4s) as a hotspot and connect to my ipad (3) :

ipad settings: Cell Data OFF Wifi OFF Bluetooth ON.

iphone settings: Cell Data ON. Bluetooth ON. Personal hotspot ON. Wifi OFF (in that order)

I can connect the ipad to the iphone's hotspot using bluetooth and it works with no interruptions.

I am able to close down all apps on my iphone (including settings) and turn off the screen. The hotspot keeps broadcasting a signal.

A bit of a pain, but it works every time for me and has never disconnected.

Too bad Apple can't seem to come up with a fix!!

Sorry, but this has nothing to do with the problem everybody is having.

As the title of the thread suggests the "APN settings won't save". In what order you turn on WiFi or Bluetooth doesn't help saving the APN settings, which is needed to make use of the Hotspot in the first place.

Additionally your solution is appearantly from Mar 3, which is a week before iOS 7.1 (which is causing this problem) was even released.

Did anybody get any new responses from Apple Support which might suggest if it's a bug they are going to fix anytime soon or if it's something else?

Well, I just updated to 7.1, from 5.1.1, with an iPhone 4.  Phone, wifi and data work perfectly.  Just not the hotspot.  I am not an AT&T subscriber, but another carrier hwo leases from AT&T.

    ???

and yes the APN settings are grayed out, and IfunBox show that the iphone has a different directory structure, and the old var and user directories, et al, are no longer visible/gone.

I hope they fix this issue as early as possible, it's already been more than a month since we have his issue.,

It could have been a small fix which they should have pushed when everyone reported it.

I raised a ticket two weeks ago, and after an escalation to 2nd level, I was offered the chance to arrange an appointment in an apple store. The supporter phoned the apple stores nearest to me (100-200 km) to confirm that they had stock of iPhones without IOS7.1.  I waited until this weekend hoping for a patch, but no luck, so as it is a long weekend, I made an appointment in Munich and drove 180km into the city.

20 mins after arriving at the store, they exchanged my iPhone under guarantee for a model with IOS 7.02. Tethering now works again and I will not update this phone again so quickly.

Raise a ticket, escalate to 2nd level. And if possible, go to your local Apple store. As I wrote many times here already, this is a user-user forum and apple will not bow to pressure here - they will respond to thousands of calls and tickets on their hotline. Raise a ticket, raise H-E-L-L if you just, but make yourself heard!

no comment from Apple and a clueless apple support although this issue is experienced by thousands of users, that's pretty steep! Keeping customers in the dark if the coming update on ios 7.1.1 will fix this issue... ?

    Hello? Apple?

Apple exchanged my iPhone with IOS7.1 for one with IOS7.02. Raise a ticket and get yourself to an apple store before all the phones with previous IOS versions are gone!

I think that the lack of information and patch from apple is very poor indeed, however I do thank them for resolving my issue - even though I had to drive 100 miles to the next store. Apple support did confirm that the store had stock before I left home, that is a service.

This is exactly how I solved my problem as well. I second @Not Happy's call.

Raise a ticket go the your next Apple Store and get yourself a new Iphone4 with IOS7.02. If you think it may help just use my previously posted Support Cases and Repair No.
