Q: mac osx 10.9 Mavericks wifi issue

Ok so Wifi is really starting to annoy now....

I have a 2013 Mac Air (about 1 month old). I upgraded to mavericks and now EVERYTIME the machine goes to sleep, i close the lid, whatever the wifi connection is shut down and on logging in again, the wifi doesn't connect. I have to manually turn off wifi and then turn on again before selecting my network (and usually needs 2 attempts).

This is unacceptable.

Does anybody else suffer from this issue? any ideas on how to fix it (other than reverting back to MLion - if that's even possible)

Thanks in advance for any responses

Kind Regards

    Works for me too!

The really strange thing is that I tried this solution about 6 weeks ago and it did not fix the problem.

    Now it works!

    Huh?

I was on 10.9.2 back then so that cannot be the reason it would not work then but works now.

I am relieved that this is the fix for me now but I sure would like to know why?

OMG!! It didn't work for me!

              What inspired this amorous rhyme?

Two parts vodka, one part lime.

All it did was turn on Bluetooth. There's way more to it. Although my WiFi tries to connect and sometimes does at a great rate, or so it says. But there is no Inernet connection. Then it drops and nothing will bring it back, short of a restart. Rinse. Repeat.

I'll second this. I took Harvey's advice and bought this dongle: http://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B00FW6T36Y/ref=oh_details_o01_s00_i00?ie=UTF8 &psc=1. For $16, I get a USB stick that features superior engineering to the wifi card in my $1,400 Apple laptop. It's a bit irritating to lose a USB slot, but it's better than dealing with Apple support.

I tried the Edimax dongle and I did not like the fact that you need to keep the Edimax wireless utility running all the time. When you hide the window for that app, it will not stay hidden when the MacBook wakes up. Also, the Edimax connects back to wireless quickly after waking from sleep but you cannot actually get on the internet for 25 seconds.

Fortunately, trashing the bluetooth prefs is working for me and I don't need to use the Edimax.

25 seconds to connect?  Me thinks you have a problem. It's a moot point because you have a wifi fix but my dongle connects instantly from sleep and when I  first put the dongle in even when it is at its end range. I found edimax support better than Apple Care. As for the app you can shut it off if you are not using it. Just like any other app leave in the dock or hide it. You can even turn the radio off when the dongle is in th port.

This is link status around  2 corners and 75 feet from base of an Airport express on an old 08 Book that even with a new wireless card installed could not get a signal in this spot. Instant link up and no delay to internet connection.

I have spent the last two months trying to solve the sleep / wake problem and have finally discovered the exact cause and a temporary fix.

Well that is interesting and some have recieved a fix when trashing the file and rebuilding it and or shutting off bluetooth. But plenty of people who do not use bluetooth have the same problem. So this fix is good for some and irrelevant for others.

If turning off Bluetooth does not fix your sleep / wake wireless problem, then you have a different problem that is not related to Bluetooth. But there is a very large number of people that do have the Bluetooth problem.

And the Bluetooth problem can be very confusing because if you trash your Bluetooth prefs and restart your Mac, then pair your Bluetooth speakers or headset, your problem has immediately returned.

I encountered a similar issue, my WiFi suddently began dropping every minute, I had to manually keep reconnecting every minute or so which was a major pain. I'm running on a MBA 2011, with Time Capsule as a base station. I tried all of the techniques listed and nothing. All other devices were working perfectly on WiFi but  I proceed to do a soft reset on my Time Capsule anyway. I carried out the soft reset and changed my passwords. Everything now seems to be working fine? No drops outs although it is early days.

This may not relate to everyone but for some in my circumstance, it might just help.

I'm having issue with very slow wifi connection for my Macbook Air.

I'm a new Mac user, having used Windows all my life, I decided to switch to Mac, becauseI hate Windows 8/Metro UI. Two months ago I bought my first Mac, 13" Macbook Air.

At first it was great, then I got several updates, since then my wifi connection has gotten worse and worse. Now I can't even play youtube videos because of the slow connection. All my devices work fine at home, my iphone, ipad, Pc laptop, PS3, PS4, etc, etc, except for Macbook Air, it can barely connect to internet. it's like going back to 56K modem. It's just terrible.

Not good first impression for this new mac user, Windows for all of its flaws at least got the basic things like this correct.

After trying all the fixes and if none of them work I suggest a $15-$20 USB wireless adapter dongle and shut your wifi off until it a patch comes through.  Either that or take it back.

This cleared up instantly when I removed my corrupted bluetooth file

Use Finder to find the file     YourHardDriveName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Bluetooth.plist

    Blow it away.

    Restart.....

My mac mini still found my apple bt trackpad but I will have to pair again with other bluetooth devices.

No big deal.  I connected right away to preferred network.....
