Q: Airplay won't change to mirror iMac from Extend Desktop

When I turn on Airplay I only get audio.  Black screen.  Airplay drop down menu shows extend desktop and won't change to mirror iMac.  I have restarted, verified/repaired permissions, checked for updates and reconnected everything.  Help! How can I get AirPlay to change back to mirror iMac?

iMac, OS X Mavericks (10.9.2)

Update: I have tried everything. Reinstalled 10.9.2. Removed AirParrot and associated files. PRAM and SMC. Still the same problem as above.

Airparrot must have done something to some setting or file. The other iMac in the house as well as my iPad all can Airplay mirror.

I installed AirParrot once, but deleted it pretty quickly. I ran a sudo search for any AirParrot files, but didn't find any. Also ran the removal tool just in case. Still can't choose the Mirror option. My iPad, iPhone connect to Apple TV just fine. Hope Apple addresses this soon.

I haven't installed AirParrot before but getting the same symptoms as everyone else. Is anyone having problems with different apps?

I am having the same issues. I am not using any third party app and airplay won't mirror from my iMac. I get the option to switch from extend to mirror, but it does not switch. I get black screen with sound. What's up? Need some help here.

Same problem as described by multiple people here: AirPlay gives only black screen on Apple TV, with settings stuck on "Extend Desktop" and won't allow selection of "Mirror iMac".  I have never installed AirParrot or any 3rd party apps for AirPlay.  Seems to be an Apple problem.  Very frustrating.

    I GOT IT!!!

For all of you out there that have not installed AIRparrot here is the fix.

    Applications>Utilites>Uninstall Air Display

Let your computer restart and that should be it.  Im not sure what caused the problem but this sure fixes it.

Message me if you have any further questions

Was weary of this, since Air Display sounds official. But after researching and seeing it was a 3rd party app I uninstalled. Worked like a charm. Thanks Copythat23! Word!

Bingo!  I forgot I had installed this app months ago, but obviously simply deleting it from the applications folder isn't enough.

    Thank you!!

The problem I was having to mirror my Mac to the AppleTV was really due to "Air Display": a third party tool designed to make an iPad behave as an aditional monitor to the Mac. I used it to quickly work on images and chekc them instantly in iPad's screen...  I will wait Avatron do provide a fixed version.

I really needed to use the script:

    Applications>Utilites>Uninstall Air Display

Now everything is back to normal and I can mirror my Mac in the AppleTV correctly

I had the same issue, and Aur Display was the culprit in my case! Glad I've sorted this now, and as EversonFromSaoPaulo said, I'll wait for a fix from Avatron. Thanks CopyThat23!

Airplay to aTV, can not select mirror option, black screen on TV, audio OK, issue started after upgrade to 10.9.2, iPhone/iPad airplay works fine.

The fix for me was to remove the application iDisplay (http://www.getidisplay.com). After doing the uninstall and reboot , Airplay mirror to aTV started to work again. It took me several weeks to find the root cause. I'm happy it is working again.

Issue was seen/resolved on my iMac model 2013, 10.9.2.

    Hope this helps.

I don't have Air Display or iDisplay on my mid 2011 iMac, but I have something that's probably similar...Splashtop and Splashtop Streamer. I ran their uninstaller and after restarting, my Apple Airplay began working again!

I really like Splashtop, so I'll probably try a fresh reinstall of the software and see if Airplay continues to work. If not, well, I guess I'll have a decision to make.

    Thank you cjwitt !

I have been since updating to 10.9.2 without airplay mirroring. You nailed it! Thank you heaps ! !

To all out there, this is the solution. Splashtop is indeed a great app BUT, obviously conflicting with AirPlay since 10.9.2
