Q: Why has movie rental feature disappeared from my old Apple TV

I have the old original version of Apple TV.  I cannot upgrade to the newer version as my Home Theatre Projector will not support HDMI.  Everything has been working fine but this last weekend the system decided to update the software and as a result I can no longer access movie trailers or rent movies.  This whole section has disappeared from the screen.  The only movie related option left is to wach my own movies off my computer.

I have tried rebooting and logging in and out of my itunes account.  All with no success.  Any ideas out there?

    Hey there Craig 100,

It sounds like you are unable to access iTunes Store content at all. I would use these steps to troubleshoot or check on the network connection of the Apple TV:

Apple TV (2nd and 3rd generation): Troubleshooting Wi-Fi networks and connections

    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4546

    1. Ensure that Apple TV is within range of your Wi-Fi router or base station.
    2. Confirm that your Wi-Fi router and cable/DSL modem are connected to power and turned on.
    3. Make sure other devices (computers, iPhone, iPad, for example) are able to connect to the Wi-Fi network and access the Internet.
    4. Check your Wi-Fi network settings on Apple TV:
      • Choose Settings > General > Network > Wi-Fi and press the center button on the remote to display nearby networks.
      • Choose your Wi-Fi network from the list.
      • If your Wi-Fi network uses a password, make sure you are entering it correctly.
    5. Restart your Apple TV by choosing Settings > General > Restart.
    6. Try restarting your Wi-Fi router or modem by turning it off and then on again.

If possible, connect an Ethernet cable and verify your Internet connection. If you can connect to the Internet using an Ethernet connection, verify that your Apple TV is using the latest software by choosing Settings > General > Software Update. If your Apple TV can be updated, install the update and then try the steps again.

There are additions sections for different symptoms, of which, I would recommend choosing the most appropriate option to continue troubleshooting.

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.

    Take care,

    Sterling

    Hi Sterling,

Unfortunately this is not the issue.  I use an ethernet connection anyway and there are no connection issues with the network or the internet.  Everything is working as it should.  I already tried re starting the system and also logged in and out of my itune account sereval times.  Apple TV showed I was successfully logged into itunes, but still no access to movies.  I also tried resetting the Apple TV.  That didn't work either.

I can stream music and video from my PC OK, which would also indicate the connections are fine.  I can also access Youtube just fine, so there is no issue with the Apple TV seeing the internet.

The other thing I have noticed is that the new updated software is very unstable.  It's jerky and slow to respond to the remote (often not responding at all or dropping out entirely).

Reading through a lot of posts in this communitity it seems like this is a wide spread problem around the globe.  It all seems to have started after a recent software upgrade.  Nobody seems to have an answer.

Concensus online seems to be this has something to do with the lastest software update.  Can you throw any light on that?

    Thanks!

    Hi Sterling,

I just took another look at my Apple TV and note the movie service has come back on line.  Looks like problem has now been resolved.

    Thanks,
