Still not entirely clear what you are attempting. To access iTunes purchased content does not require that Home Sharing be activated. Assuming you have issues connecting to ituens:

    1. Make sure you have an intertnet connection (adn possibly restart your router)
    2. Make sure you are signing into your account under ituens store (not home sharing) first.
    3. Restart the device
    4. Reset the device

I have an internet connection and have restarted and reset the device  via my MacBook per instructions. i also have home sharing turned on through itunes but am unsure of your meaning on this one, can you elaborate?. I do appeciate the help James but i am seriously thinking of just giving up the ghost and just playing via airplay. Apple make some really good products but this is just frigging frustraing.

If the conent you are trying access was purchased via iTunes ("music, movies, TV shows, etc.), you do not need Home Sharing to access it. You only need to sign into iTunes. It will then be available on the AppleTV directly for streaming.

    Have you restarted the router?
