Oct 25, 2013 12:36 PM in response to Brian Davidson2by Brian Davidson2,I found the answer, at least for my situation. The drive was password protected and keychain was not prompting me to unlock it.
The drive was locked for some reason. In Disk Utility, right-click the drive name and click "unlock". I entered they password and it opened.

Oct 25, 2013 2:44 PM in response to anna-con-pannaby raulitoburrito,I'm expirencing a similar situation except my Kingston Data Travler G3 8GB drives bring up an error message where it says the device is drawing too much power and that the system has disabled the USB port. It suggests pulling out the device to restart the USB port, but upon reinserting the drive it brings up the same error. I have a second drive of the same model, brand, and capacity and it is also having the same issues. My Sandisk USB flash drives are not having this issue. I was reading on another post for WiFi connection issues and a solution for that was to do a clean install. I'm going to try that since I need access to my college's WiFi network. My flash drives should be formatted in their default, FAT. I did notice when I booted into Bootcamp that my recovery partion was also upgraded from Mac OS X 10.8 to 10.9, thus I should be able to do a clean install from there instead of using a USB drive. My MacBook Pro model is A1278.

Oct 31, 2013 1:57 PM in response to Brian Davidson2by lglover,I have the same problem that Brian Davidson2 had, but his solution didn't work for me, unfortunately. I updated to Mavericks and suddenly couldn't mount my WD My Passport, although it appears in Disk Utility (greyed out). When I run disk repair and permissions repair, Passport shows as unmounted. I called WD Support and they ran me through several tests and concluded that Passport isn't the problem. I tend to agree because I don't believe in coincidences.
I hope someone comes up with a solution that works for me. Thanks for any help.

Nov 3, 2013 6:44 PM in response to lgloverby smith115,Hey all,
looks like this is not just a WD problem
A buddy and I both have Lacie 1TB thunderbolt/USB3 rugged drives and are unable to mount them on mavericks. It's weird. It worked on his mavericks but not on mine. And it also worked on a machine running Mountain Lion as well...
The opposite occurs for him. Drives that wont open on his system running mavericks will work on mine..
Apple- Any help or fixes for this??

Nov 3, 2013 6:52 PM in response to smith115by PlotinusVeritas,WD and LaCie external drive notice for Mavericks
If you have a RAID setup, data corruption is possible. Exact source determination has not been made yet.
Until there is resolution,... keep all RAID setups unconnected and consider other means for backup, such as simplex USB non-RAID backup.
see here:

The simple issue currently are that with Mavericks, Thunderbolt and FIrewire drives are not sleeping, ...this perpetual on-time can cause overheating,......as said, keep them unconnected unless in direct use.
WD is telling its customers to REMOVE WD SOFTWARE especially on WD MyBook
If you hav a WD with WD software, or a WD MyBook,...keep your WD MY BOOK unconnected right now until a resolution unless you have a backup of ALL DATA on your MyBook stored elsewhere

Community Manager WESTERN DIGITAL
External Drives for Mac Experiencing Data Loss with Maverick OS (10/30/13)
There are reports of Western Digital and other external HDD products experiencing data loss when updating to Apple's OS X Mavericks (10.9). Western Digital is urgently investigating these reports and the possible connection to the WD Drive Manager, WD Raid Manager and WD SmartWare software applications.
Until the issue is understood and the cause identified, WD strongly urges our customers to uninstall these software applications on their systems before updating to OS X Mavericks (10.9), or delay upgrading. If you have already upgraded to Mavericks, WD recommends that you remove these applications and restart your computer. WD has removed these software applications from our web site solely as a precaution as we investigate this issue.
Peace

Nov 30, 2013 7:05 AM in response to anna-con-pannaby bwtalley,My Western Digital drive will not mount on my MacbookPro either... and I've recently upgraded to Maverick as well. Very very frustrating, as my time machine backups are all on this drive. PlotinusVeritas seems to have discovered as much as we can know for now. I just hope they are working on this diligently.

Dec 4, 2013 12:08 AM in response to anna-con-pannaby anafromvrbovec,Hi, I upgraded my iMac to Mavericks yesterday and i could not open my external USB hdd (1TB), disk utillity just said there is an error, i could do nothing. I was really schocked and was hoping that i wount loose my data... Well i was in several forums reading about the same issue. My USB HDD is from WP - My Passport and thats what i did:
I downloaded several softwares from the WD Support site ( WDFirmwareUpdater, WD Drive Manager Installer, WD SmartWare Installer, WD +TURBO Installer), and i downloaded the ntfs-3g-2010.10.2-macosx.dmg software file, i installed it and shut down my mac... Ater restarting it guess what my UBS HDD - My Passeport is working again! All data is where it should be and i can use it.
Maybe someone helps what i did to get my USB HDD working again. If someone has a clue how i could enter my TimeMachine data - i would be happy if you share it here...
Now i just have to figure out how to get my backup back from the other WD-My Passeport drive that i use for Time Machine - i can only see the "All files" but i cant restore my mac from there - thats to bed cause i have all my paid apps and registration info in there...
P.S. after installing Mavericks my mouse works the "wrong way" - now working good cause i use the "Scroll Reverser".

Apr 27, 2014 7:01 AM in response to anna-con-pannaby avery12345,I have a Seagate Barracuda 2TB "External HD"
. Well, it's an internal HD that I have put in a Caddy.
I was using with my MacBook with OS 10.6.
However, I visited a friend recently, and connected my HD to their new Mac using Mavericks (OS 10.9).
Everything worked fine... but since returning and connecting my HD to my MacBook again (OS 10.6) - it can't see it !!!
In fact, it isn't even visible in Disk Utility... nothing!
Not even a greyed out icon.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
PS: When I connected it to my friend's computer (using Mavericks) I did set a "colour" to some of the folders on my HD.
I know that the folder or file colouring system is different on Mavericks. You can set multiple colours to a file/folder... on OS 10.6 (Snow Leopard) you can only set one. Don't know if that effected it?

Jun 16, 2014 11:23 AM in response to anna-con-pannaby HappyScotsLass,16 June 2014 - Drives and Devices Not Mounting in Mavericks...... Try This.....
Download the application OnyX (Mavericks). You can get it here.....
http://download.cnet.com/1770-20_4-0.html?query=onyx&platform=Mac&searchtype=dow nloads
I had trouble with all my Apple devices not mounting and syncing with iTunes. I installed OnyX and did some general cleaning. Please be careful. Also please remember to virus check your download before install. I have had no trouble from cnet.
I think the important tool settings are in OnyX / Parameters / Misc /.......
Select the check boxes for DISK UTILITY:-
- Verify Dik Images (.dmg)
- Add Other Formats of Disk Images
- Show Debug Menu
- Verify The Disks After Burning
My devices show on mount, are now visible in Disk Utility, and are syncing in iTunes.....
Good Luck, Hope it works for you.
