Feb 28, 2014 5:38 PM in response to Bectiveby Lawrence Finch,If you installed the update over the air using WiFi on the phone the two possibilites are that it either lost the connection to Apple's servers during the update or the battery was completely drained.
If you were installing the update using iTunes on your computer losing the USB connection to the phone can cause a problem like yours. This could happen if you were using a USB hub rather than a direct connection, or you had some other USB device that malfunctioned. It can also be caused by antivirus software, but if you have a Mac I hope you don't have any "protection" software, as all of it is both unnesessary and in some cases can cause more damage than it can prevent.

I'll turn in for the night shortly (it's 1.36 am here in Dublin) and leave my iTunes restore invitation sitting there until I get the Apple Support call in the morning. I'll go through the steps with the support person over the phone and will let you know the result.
I'm going to bed with an easier mind and have a good idea now of what remains to be done. Do you think my phone is faulty because of what happened?

This morning I put my boy on the bus, and texted my hubby while walking back in the house, went to get back on my phone, and nothing but a black screen. I held down the power button for awhile, pressed all the buttons and nothing, not even putting it on a charger did anything, and I was very scared and upset, cause I paid over $600 for the phone, and it's my very first iphone ever. I was about to go back to my android, but thot before I do that, that I would look it up on the internet and see if I can find any solutions to getting my phone working. Well, this thread was the first one I seen, and I saw solution, so I went and tried it, and wah lah....the apple icon came on the screen, and now it's working just like before. You sure are a life saver! Thanks, thanks, thanks!

Just thought I would add though, my son was using the hotspot for his ipad when it turned off the first time so after rebooting, he went to use it again and it switched straight off again. Rebooted a second time and it's fine - he's just not using the hotspot now.

My phone was completely dead, randomly shutting off, and asking to be restored, then choking on the restore. Tried hard reboot and anything I could think of and nothing worked. Even ordered a replacement through verizon cause I had insirance on it. But thinking I'd have to wait a few days to get a replacement, I kept looking for fixes. This absolutely seems to have work. Hopefully this will hold. Probably will swap it out for the replacement when it comes anyway, but amazed that this seems to have worked.

Apr 4, 2014 9:53 AM in response to John Hall3by John Hall3,So after restoring it about a half dozen times, only to have it shut down and ask to be restored again within a half hour, I finally did a restore and set up as a new phone, and added no music or non-essential apps. Has been fine for several hours now, the longest period yet. So I'm thinking the whole problem may have been app or music related. I did replace a lot of songs with imatch versions lately. Could one of those be corrupt? Of could it be some app upgrade? How do you narrow it down to which though, especially if its a music file.
And since I have a new phone comng through my verizon insurance, is it likely that if I reload my full backup on there, I'll have the same issues. Time will tell I guess. For now I'm just going to use it like this for the weekend, so I'm not without a phone.

Apr 8, 2014 4:23 AM in response to John Hall3by crm911,It happened to my 5S and I booked an appointment with the genius Bar but I just came across RJM's tip, which seems to have cured my issue. I have to charge it to see if it recovers, but at least I could see the outline of a dead battery.
In my case I wasn't doing anything before it died. Probably checked mail or Facebook when last used. Not many apps in use. It refused to turn on and it couldn't be flat at that time of day. It would not take a charge from a battery - in fact it turned off its LEDs, as if the circuitry didn't like the iPhone in that state. But RJM's tip worked.

Apr 22, 2014 5:25 AM in response to myiphoneisgoldenby Optic42002,My wife's iPhone 5s suddenly died and as mentioned above, holding the sleep and home buttons together for about 10 seconds worked perfectly to get it back up. I tried the mute switch toggle first and that did not work but the holding of the sleep and home buttons only did. Just a note that it definitely worked for us. Thanks for the advise guys!

Besides that no problems at all. Was talking on it this morning at full power, went to take a shower, came back to find the phone screen black. Would not turn back on and tried many many tricks from this thread and others. Took it to the genius bar - they could not figure it out. Took it to Verizon - same ending. Both wanted $200 -$300 for a replacement. I kept the phone in an otterbox and quit apps religiously. Has this happened to anyone else?
