Aside from the format issue, you need a burn application which will author and render the movie file onto a DVD which will be readable to any DVD player. First choice would be iDVD still available as part of the retail iLife 09 or 11 disk and great for giving your movie a professional look with customizable menus/themes; or there is Roxio Toast (excellent, but not much re. themes/menus), or Burn which is free (and a simple app).
Not all burn softwares can read all formats so you may also need to convert it first; if the burn software can't read that format, you can try Handbrake or MPEG Streamclip for that if you need it.
Last idea: if you had the older iMovie, you should still have it and you could import your video there and then export it from there with better export options/choices.
