Apr 25, 2014 4:06 PM in response to creativefiby Tomio Toyama,Dear Apple and Customer Support,
I too am having the same problem on my iMac. I was listening to a YouTube video and then out of no where the sound went mute. I'm not longer even able to go volume up or down you just see a "canceled" line going through the volume speaker every time you try to raise or lower it.
The output available is only listed as digital output, which makes no sense. I have quite literally never plugged in headphones or external speakers to this iMac previously.
Is there a permanent fix for this? All posters and responses from the last 2 years seem to indicate it's a completely random fix with no permancy. Any changes to this?
Thank you. This is highly annoying as I have transitioned from my MacBook to my iMac a primary work and personal computer.

I have pluged the jack in the back of the computer, I have been to the Setting Preferences/Sound/ Output but still nothing.
I have only the built in speakers.
What shall I do, please ?

Oct 14, 2014 1:08 PM in response to creativefiby veeoglass,My headphone jack stopped working after the last download from Apple. I found out that in the Preferences and Sound/ Sound Output, the output bar had been moved all the way down. After I moved it back the headphone jack worked again. Apple Support told me I had to pay 20.00 or take it to an store to have it fixed. You would think they would have at least suggested that move. Hope it works for you.

Dec 8, 2014 7:08 AM in response to den.thedby ESQ8879,None of these worked:
- Safe Boot
- PRAM Reset
- SMC Reset
- Headphone Jack (No audio either)
- Noticed that my internal Mic isn't working either
Is there any diagnostic tool I can use to see if my audio card is working?
I have a 27" iMac from mid-2011 running Yosemite 10.10.1

Feb 26, 2016 3:45 PM in response to creativefiby TabitRabbit.com,I had the same issue on my mac the external sound stopped working but the head phone still worked. Then later my headphones stopped working as well.
This is how I fixed it.
-> System Preferences
--> Sound
---> Output
----> Internal Speakers - Type: Built- In
This also fixed the audio to my head phones
Good luck

Apr 2, 2016 11:53 AM in response to creativefiby Ryanrpm ,Mine started working once I pressed F10 (mute) on then off. I checked all other settings, even restarted it, but this worked.
Some software glitch I'm sure.
