Thanks for the question. Let's check to see if Do Not Disturb is enabled. You can quickly enable/disable Do Not Disturb from the Control Center (the "moon" icon):
iOS: Understanding Control Center

Additional Information:

When enabled, calls and alerts received while the device is locked will be silenced
Thanks,
Matt M.

Oct 24, 2013 11:40 PM in response to matt00by Timothy Nicholas Jones,Same problem with me. Except I have no alert sounds at any time. Unlocked or locked. The first week it was fine. Then there was an update and I haven't had rings or alerts since then.
Do Not Disturb is not on, sounds are on. And yes, before anyone asks, I've turned the phone off and on a few times. Any other solutions?

Nov 14, 2013 11:16 AM in response to Timothy Nicholas Jonesby adkvalone,THANK YOU! somehow, this exact thing happened to me on my 5s. Have been trying to figure out the problem for days. Had thought my latest software upgrade had caused it. Don't even know how it got switched, but thanks for saving me a trip to the Apple Store!

Mar 25, 2014 1:29 PM in response to L.S.F.by Stephen U.,Yes I am having the same sound problem. But my sound does not work when it is plugged in. I do have have Bluetooth enabled, "Do Not Disturb" is off, and my silent switch is off. The sound only stops when it is charging.
Please help

Apr 26, 2014 8:57 AM in response to L.S.F.by Gregory4881,Had similar problem as above. New 5s only made sounds with incoming phone calls....nothing else. Worked fine yesterday. Found the answer in one of the responses above. All I had to do to fix the problem was turn the phone off and back on! Thanks for the help.
