After automatically downloading the update, the iMac would not shut down. Instead the error message "upapproved caller" appeared. After manually shutting down the PC it would not restart (stuck on grey screen with rotating ring). Starting with the option key, the hard disk was found ok by the disk utility and it has sufficient free space (> 100 gB).
All I could do was restore the last good backup.

I have a similar problem,
I'm trying to install 2014-002 on my iMac 27" late 2012.
Computer reboots and gets stuck with this screen. When I try to click in the menus nothing happens. I had to push the power button for 10 sec to reboot again.
Same problem as Dimartino, both with stand alone update and through the app store, no solution yet.
Likewise, same as Dimartino. On the initial install, instead of restarting, my Mac Pro running 10.9.2 went to the login screen. App Store keeps telling the update is both installed and not installed (I got the new Safari out of it, it seems), but when I try to reinstall, it gets stuck on "SoftwareUpdateLauncher" and the power button is the only way out.
I tried an internet re-install of Mavericks (⌘-R at boot), unfortunately it didn't help, I still have the same problem when I try to install the update.

In case the link doesn't work, once you get the white screen, go to the apple menu and select logout, then press return/enter one or two times, and everything continues.
That did it for me! I didn't even need the logout. I just had to hit the return key ONCE when the SoftwareUpdateLauncher screen came up.
