Q: How to display 2560x1080 on external monitor from MBP or MBA?

Is there any way to make MBP 17 (Intel HD and nVidia GT graphics, SnowLeo) or MBA 13 (Mountain Lion) display 2560x1080 on external monitor (LG 29" ultrawide)? My MacPro with RadeonX1900 card (10.5.8) does it perfectly but I cannot find a way to get the laptops to do it. Tried res. switching apps, still no good. Thanks.

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.8)

the mini display port to display port solution works, but there is one slight issue.  The monitor in Mavericks seems to only want to show 21:9 or wide screen ONLY.  I can't seem to get 1:1 resolution, so whenever a game or application is running 1920x1080 it stretches everything out.... super annoying.  I tried using the setting on the monitor and it won't work.  However, if I switch over to windows I can set the setting (using the monitors menus) to 1:1.

Using the DVI and SwitchResX solution will only get you 52mhz and not 60, same goes for hdmi.  I don't have any of the jaggedy text issues on the LG29EA73 though.

I guess on MBA its totally impossibile to get 2560x1080 unless you use

    Mini DisplayPort/Dual-Link DVI

which cost round 90€ in apple store. Does anyone got a better idea. I tried even the Mini DP to DP cabele too. Totally black screen.:-(

Hi guys, I have a MBP 13 2011 16GB and can't get this monitor to work with 2560x1080 mDP -> DP cable. The monitor is correctly identified by Mac OS but the screen is totally black. I noticed the Console has a lotos messages with "Restoring DP Link". With HDMI, work 1080p 1:1 perfectly.

Some people who also did the memory upgrade complain of similar problems but I have no idea if it's related.

I have a MBP 17 2011 and have the saem issue using a mini-displaylink to displaylink cable. I plug it into my Acer B296CL and the monitor goes black. MBP recognizes the monitor and everything, but the monitor never seems to get proper signal. If I change the resolution to 480p the monitor displays properly. Thsi is the only adapter I have that does not push to the monitor properly. My HDMI to mini displaylink works fine but the max setting is 1080p. If anyone finds a solution to this pleas let me know. (I also have had a memory upgrade done) I think it may be a good start for us to start a new thread.

I have a MBA 13 2010 and the monitor lg 29ea73 with native resolution 2560x1080. I use a cable Mini DP x DP e the only way to make work on full resolution is with a program called "SwitchResX". I install the program and restart my Mac 3 times with the monitor plugged in and after the 3 times It works.

Finally found a solution to my problem. My monitor has a setting for Display Port Version. There is a version DP 1.1 and DP 1.2. I changed mine to use Display Port 1.1 and I can now use native resolution of 2560x1080. This is on the ACER B296CL monitor and Macbook Pro Late 2011. I am using the Displayport to minidisplayport cable. This is the only cable I found to support the native resolution.

Brilliant – thank you! Have been trying to get this monitor to work correctly for hours, and this solved it.

    1. Use Mini displayport -> DVI adapter

    2. Set custom res in SwitchResX

    3. Restart

    Whew!

I've only done this with my MBP 13", early 2013. Depending on the year of your MBA, they share video processors – so should work. But haven't tried sorry!

I am using the Acer B296CL as well and a Macbook Pro 13" I just bought a couple of month ago.

First I tried to use a minidisplayport to hdmi cable adapter but it did not show me the right resolution. After reading the post of keap I bought a minidisplayport to displayport cable. I now see the resolution 2560x1080, and I am using DP 1.1, but what happens is:

    http://www.directupload.net/file/d/3608/ntdi32bh_jpg.htm

If I use 2048x864 it works perfectly fine, only on the full Resolution this happens.

    Thanks,

I am having the same problem as Jan Philip.  (I also have the same screen shrinking problem when I try to go to 2560x1080.)

    • I have a Macbook Air from early 2013, and I am trying to connect it with the B296CL 29" 2560x1080 Display.

    • The HDMI to minidisplay conversion didn't work, which doesn't seem surprising given what I've seen on the threads.  I am now using a display port to mini display port cord because I thought that was the only cable capable of carrying a 2560x1080 signal from my Macbook Air.

    • SwitchResX doesn't seem to work, but I'm not completely sure I'm using it correctly. (when I toggle my acer display to the appropriate 2560x1080 resolution, I get the exact same problem as when I change it manually through system preferences.

    • I also tried Keap's solution of changing DP 1.2 to DP 1.1 and then switching the resolution on my computer, but the same problem occurred.

Is there something I'm not trying? Jan Philip, anyone, any solutions?

Any help would be incredibly appreciated.  You guys put me to shame in how much more you know about how to deal with this stuff- thank you!

    Hey Nick !

I'm glad I can tell you that I figured out how it works!

I was first using a pretty cheap mini Displayport to Displayport cable, then my brother told me to buy a better one. Pluged it in, Mac instantly showed me the right resolution and everything works fine. Here is the cable I bought, hope that helps and you find the one in the amazon of your country! - btw I'm from Germany.

    Cheers,

Thanks for that advice- however, tragically, I just received the lenovo cord and it also creates the screen distortion, same as the cheap one.  Can anyone help with troubleshooting?

Feeling technologically defeated at the moment.
