Apr 30, 2014 9:19 AM in response to margburnettby Rudegar, home sharing is not tied to the appleID any computer or appletv on the same network can access a shared itunes lib if they provide the password if one is required
thats where home sharing comes from it existed long before appletvs and was made so daughter and son can play the music stored on mum and dads computer across the lan network

I don't mean to quibble here but I think there may be some exceptions, at least in the US. I agree with most of what you have indicated but I think movies and maybe TV shows could be a problem. I am pretty sure that they require authentication by Apple, even if residing locally, to ensure the viewer is authorized to view the media. I have heard of people unable to watch local media on devices during a power outage, because their LAN is down which prevents the device from getting out to authenticate with Apple.
To add to this, I have three screen shots which call this into question:
#1- Please note that this indicates that sharing is "ON" for this laptop yet, I can tell you for a fact that it cannot be seen by other devices on my network (via iTunes or A-TV).
#2- Please note that I am required to "turn on" the already "On" sharing under the FILE menu
#3- Once I choose to turn sharing "on" through the FILE menu, I am presented with this screen which clearly does require an Apple ID
Now my concern is that if @margburnett, the OP, would change the A-TV Apple ID to match the one used for home sharing he/she would lose access to the media purchased through the original Apple ID account. This has become a big issue, how to move media from one Apple ID to another, when people change their Apple ID or when couples split.
Hope this helps,
Bill

Apr 30, 2014 10:13 AM in response to Wm Gardnerby vazandrew,The first screen is for shared libraries, that has nothing to do with home sharing.
You can use your existing Apple ID to setup home sharing or you can use one specifically for this purpose. In either case, it has nothing to do with your account used to purchase media.
You can setup multiple accounts under one home sharing ID as well.

Apr 30, 2014 10:34 AM in response to vazandrewby Wm Gardner,Vaz & Marg,
I just dug through the settings on my A-TV and it looks like Vaz is absolutely correct. I would add that A-TV only seems to see libraries and computers using Home Sharing, so any discussion of not turning it on seems moot.
Marg- what I had to do, in order to find what Vaz was referring to, was go into the Settings area of my A-TV:
Settings -> Computers -> Turn off Home Sharing
then
Settings (still) -> Computers -> Turn on Home Sharing
At this point you are asked if you want to use the same Apple ID or if you would like to use a different one. As Vaz indicated, you CAN use a different Apple ID, to match the other computer, if that is your preference.
Now, just some simple opperational reminders........
- Unless you also have that Apple ID setup, in iTunes, on the computer in question, it will not be able to download the media you purchase via your A-TV
- In order for your A-TV to "see" your computer's media, your computer not only needs to be on but logged in as the user who configured this iTunes Home Sharing under AND, iTunes must be running. If you shut down iTunes, Apple TV will not see the computer.
Hope this helps,
Bill
