Q: 2011 MacBook Pro and Discrete Graphics Card

I have an early 2011 MacBook Pro (2.2 GHz Intel Core i7, 8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 memory) running OS 10.8.2.  It has two graphics components: an AMD Radeon HD 6750M and a built-in Intel HD Graphics 3000. Since I've had the computer, the screen would get a blue tint when the computer switched between them.

However, as of two days ago, the problem has become substantially more severe.  The computer was working fine, when all of a suddent the screen when completely blue.  I had to force restart the computer.  Since then, the screen has gone awry on numerous occassions - each time necessitating a hard reset.

I installed gfxCardStatus, and have discovered that the computer runs fine using the integrated card, but as soon as I switch to the discrete card - the screen goes .

I am just wondering what my options are (any input on any of these would be appreciated!):

1) Replace the logic board.  Would this necessarily fix the issue?

2) Is there any way to "fix" the graphics card?

3) Keep using gfxCardStatus and only use the integrated graphics card.  This is definitely the easiest/cheapest option, but to have such a computer and not be able to use the graphics card seems like a real shame.

4) Is there any other alternative?

@josepiedaly1122 Actually it will work for the US too and that depend on the person you talk to. You just have to explain the situtation let them that's a wide spread problem and its not your fault and keep asking what can they do for you. You didn't pay that much money just to last 2 years. Make sure to provide them with some proof. You can say that other got their replacement for free. If you want screenshot check out the group on FB for more helps. Good luck!

You can also call AU support too. All you really need from them is a note for exemption

Well, that was 15 minutes of my time I will never get back. No chance. I even begged a little but got the same answer "that model does not have any current recall" and "you will need to take it to a store for repair at full cost".

Sigh. Off to the notsoGenuis bar I go. Thanks for the help regardless.

I accidentally deleted most of the ATI Radeon 6940m drivers from my macbook pro early 2011 and I don't know how to reinstall them without reinstalling the whole OS because it's stuck to the descrete graphics card and gfxcardstatus is not helping and I think If I reinstall the drivers It might actually work because I've no problem with windows on bootcamp! thank you

Personally, I wouldn't recommend you to go to 3rd party repair shops. Unless you really don't mind discrediting your claim, you'll be taking more risks if you went to a 3rd party shop. First, your chance of getting your Mac fixed for free or even get a replacement will be close to none if they found out that your Mac underwent an unauthorized repair. Apple's component are exclusive to Apple only and their Authorized Repair Centers. Also, some or maybe most of the components like logic boards are refurbished items. The chances of the resurfacing issue is very high even after a logic board replacement. I got a second replacement now and I still got the same issue. My take is let Apple do its duties. So if all else fail, you are entitled for a another repair or better, a new unit.

My conclusion from what you say and some others here who has Apple repairs is that the refurbished logic boards from Apple were just reflowed which is a very temporary repair that if it works at all and that is why people get them replaced once and sometimes twice and they still have problems with them, if they were reballed that would not be the case. Reballing your original board is a much better choice if it is done by a reputable place.

Well I don't know about that. That would definitely be considered fraud in my country.
I just think they just replaced the logic boards with refurbished that would imminently fail aswell.

    Hi PequeLord,

I contacted Apple Executive services. They covered the cost of the logic board replacement (but it broke 4 days later). The genius at Regents Street went back and forth with his manager but they didn't budge on a free repair. Executive services phoned later covered to it.

Apple do not repair broken parts. Just change them with new ones. When there are no new items in its stores. Sold leave the equipment out of coverage, but that only happens after many years. Or that's what someone said to me the technical service.
