Provided Home Sharing is enabled, you can easily use the iOS remote application on your iPhone / iPad to contract your AppleTV.  You could in theory configure another remote to be used but you would need an Apple Remote to set it up in the first place.

In the app, touch the settings icon (the gear) and flip the switch for home sharing to be on.  It should see your AppleTV if Home Sharing is already turned on in the AppleTV settings then it will show up in the App.

FYI - Both your iPhone and your AppleTV need to be on the same network for this to work.  Since you don't have your Apple Remote you will not be able to reconfigure the AppleTV wireless network so I suggest a physical cable to whatever network your iPhone is connecting to to workaround this problem.

Was is same situation but unfortunately home sharing had not been enabled on my Apple TV. After hours of trawling the net for a solution and many failed attempts, came across a solution that worked. You will need to have, beg or borrow an android phone with infrared capability. I used my old Galaxy tab 10.1. Download the Apple TV IR remote app from google play store. You then use the app as an Apple TV remote. You can then get into Apple TV settings, set up home sharing, connect to the wifi network etc. You can also train any spare TV remote to act as the Apple TV remote. This method worked perfectly for me.

Unfortunately have lost the original link to this but many thanks to whoever originally posted it.

Not much help if you cannot get hold of suitable android device unfortunately.
