Q: Why can't I scan with Preview?

(It won't work with Imagecapture either but that doesn't worry me so much.)
It should work. You don't need a driver installed to use Image Capture with your scanner.

I got the driver from a Canon site. Also just downloaded the one you suggested too, thank you. Have rebooted just for fun.. Done things in the right order. Scanner is on (lit up), but doesn't show up in Preferences, Printers and Scanners.
The most perplexing part is it works fine with Vuescan, but as I said, I've always been an Apple guy. (When I open Vuescan, the scanner responds with a friendly little buzz.)
