Q: How can I play a dvd on my Mac and display it through Apple TV

I want to use my DVD drive on my mac to play back movies through my apple tv2. I notice that on my iPad, iPhone, iTunes on my computer all have the AirPlay option to display the video on my TV through Apple TV. I do not want to burn my DVD onto my Mac and play through iTunes becasue its a hassle.

AppleTV 2, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.3)

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities

One thing you can do is to play the DVD in your Mac using DVD Player instead of iTunes, and then, turn on AirPlay Mirroring to stream your computer's display to your Apple TV > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5404

If your Mac isn't compatible with AirPlay Mirroring, use a third-party app like AirParrot > http://www.airparrot.com This is the only option, because the Apple TV isn't compatible with discs

Logical but it won't work - DVD player output will be a grey checkerboard pattern.

Apple apps prevent Airplay of DVD content at low level presumably for some copy protection reason.

VLC player is believed to work.

I have a brand new iMac (compatible with AirPlay Mirroring), a new dvd player and a brand new apple TV. If I follow the instructions given by mende1 to watch a dvd I bought, I just see the grey checkboard pattern. What is the apple solution for this? I cannot believe I cannot watch a DVD using appleTV. I understand the issues with DVD regions, etc but I have also changed the region of the apple TV to be London as is my dvd player.

By the way I tried VLC player but it just crash.

    Thanks for any help

There is no solution for the native DVD player, VLC is the only workaround I am aware of at this time. The issue looks to be with copy protection.

Thanks vazandrew.  I downloaded VLC, took 2 minutes and was free.  Instantly played all my DVD's streamed perfectly onto Apple TV.

I am using MacBook Air (10.9.2), external DVD player and Apple TV.

    Simple and free

    Thank you.

    OrsoGrizzly

    Am I missing something here?

Why wouldn't you just hook your external DVD player to your TV?

don't upgrade vlc though people report that the fact that vlc works mean they are breaking the drm encryption of the dvd which is not really legal

so newer versions may result in back to chess

it's drm laws which cause it and apples solution would not be likely to break the law
