iCloud is not a backup system for your iMac, Time Machine does that.

As CSound1 suggests Time Machine is a very good local backup method - it's built into the system and requires an external hard disk: it keeps old or deleted files (unlike most backup systems).
It's also useful to make a clone of your Mac on an external hard disk - this is an exact copy, so in the event the internal disk fails you can start up from it and run your Mac while you try to deal with the problem.
Online backups are useful as a backup to the backup - for example if the house burned down. You can back up a selection of important files to a number of online services, some of which are examined here:
