Q: My charger light is green but my computer isn't charging

I am absolutely freaking out. My charger is plugged in, and the light is green, but my computer remains at 35%, it's not dying, but it's not charging. I have done MANY trouble shooting excersises, I've done the SMC thing, and that didn't work either. I've tried plugging it into many different sockets but obviously (since i'm asking) that hasnt worked either. As you can tell from the imformation below, its not fully charged, but it's also not charging. I dont know if this information helps but I've had my computer since October 2013, it's now April 2014, so thats 6 months I've had my computer. Also, usually as soon as i relaize it has reached 100% i take my charger out, though sometimes if my computer is dead and I'm leaving the house, i leave it sleeping but charging until i get back home, also i don't frequetly shut it down, i simply leave it on sleep. ADDITINALLY I don't live in a country that has ANY Apple stores or specialist.. so sadly going to see a professional is out of the question, unless of course i can speak with them on the phone? PLEASE help me PLEASE

    brittbien,

in looking at your AC Charger Information section, do you have a third-party AC charger? If you have an Apple charger, then it might be defective, judging from its invalid ID, Family, and Serial Number values, and lack of any Wattage value.

Hi, I'm using the charger that came with my computer, I have been asking friends if i could use their charger to test and see if mine is just not working anymore, and a friend said they'd bring one over today. So just to get this clear, you think my charger is the problem? And not my battery, right?

    brittbien,

if your charger was made by Apple, then it could be the problem; I can’t say with absolute certainty that it is the problem. (For example, if your charger is made by Apple and it displays its AC Charger Information correctly on another Mac, then your MacBook Pro’s MagSafe port could be the problem; there’s not enough information yet to make a certain diagnosis.)

Hi, I'm just waiting for a friend so i can test this theory( with the chargers) but something else happened. My computer wasnt charging, but it wasnt dying either, but its been about 4 days since this has happened and its now gone down from 35% to 34%... Does that help in figuring out what is the problem?

    brittbien,

no, that fact is not relevant to the problem.

While waiting for your friend, you could take a look at your charger to see whether it was made by Apple or not. Is there an Apple logo in relief on two of its sides? Does one of the other sides have text that states “numberW MagSafe Power Adapter”, where number is either 60 or 85, and below it “Designed by Apple in California”, and at the bottom of the text there, a trademark and copyright claimed by Apple Inc.?

Your information indicates that the battery is fine, condition of Normal is what you want to see, the voltage is right where it should be and the capacity is correct.

However, the AC Charger Information says that the charger has failed since it is recognized as connected but there is no further data from the charger.  Try your friend's charger and see if that works properly, but start looking into a new charger from Apple, avoid third-party units as they often do not provide the proper power and can cause damage.

You are welcome, and you will probably find your friends power adapter works for your Mac if it is the right power.
