Q: How to reinstall OSX Mavericks without Losing data?

Hello my Mid-2012 13 inch Dual core i7, 8gb ram, 750 gb harddrive mac book pro running Mavericks with the latest updates runs fine, but it has trouble coming back on after it dies after i plug the cord in a hit the power button to wake it up, get a black screen that freezes for 30 seconds and all is good. When i log into my account, it takes about 2minutes for my Dock to show up, 20 shortcut icons on the deskop, and my menu bar to show up. no login items are tuned on at all. if i try to clik something before everthing shows up i get the spinning wheel for about five seconds I dont think that such a high powerd machien should take that long to log on and get moving. So i am wondering how can i reintall mavericks without losing data ans personal settings. Even though i have time machine set up i dont want to lose anything. And do you think a reinstall with help this problem Thank for reading this and thanks if you supplied and answer.

Before considering a reinstall, let's see if your Mac has anything on it that might be causing all of your issues.

It would help us to help you if we could have some more technical info about your iMac.

If you wish, Please download, install and run Etrecheck.

Etrecheck was developed as a simple Mac diagnostic tool by a regular Apple Support forum user and technical support contributor named Etresoft.

Etrecheck is a small, unobstrusive app that compiles a static snapshot of your entire Mac hardware system and installed software.

This is a free app that has been honestly created to provided help in diagnosing issues with Macs running the new OS X 10.9 Mavericks.

It is not malware and can be safely downloaded and installed onto your Mac.

Copy/paste and post its report here in another reply thread so that we have a complete profile of your Mac's hardware and installed software so we can all help with your Mac performance issues.

Reinstalling OS X will only reinstall components of it that may have been removed or corrupted, and will not remove CleanMyMac. Reinstalling OS X will not affect your other programs or files.

Nothing less than erasing your Mac and rebuilding it from the ground up will undo the effects of having used CleanMyMac, and its developer's instructions for uninstalling it are not completely effective.

If you have a Time Machine backup created prior to installing CleanMyMac, boot OS X Recovery, and at the Mac OS X Utilities screen, choose Restore from Time Machine Backup. Choose a date preceding the installation of CleanMyMac. Do not reinstall it, or anything like it, ever again.

A while back I had made the mistake of installing CleanMyMac and complete erasure was the only thing that completely removed CMM's ill effects.  I gotta tell you, that was less fun than root canal!

At a minimum, your Mac is running substantially slower than it should thanks to CMM.  In effect, you paid for a virus!

    1. Deleted the contents of my Time Machine drive and converted it to a regular external drive.

    2. Copied all of my data files (and ONLY data files) to the external drive.

    3. Physically disconnected the external drive.

    4. Shut down the Mac.

    5. Did a CMD-R restart of the Mac.

    6. COMPLETELY erased the Mac's HD.

    7. Reloaded Mavericks OS.

    8. Connected the external drive.

    9. Copied all data files to the Mac's HD.

    10. Erased external drive.

    11. Changed external drive to be a Time Machine drive.

    12. All of the above took a full 16-hour day.

    13. Spent the next three days configuring the OS and reloading applications preferences, user IDs, passwords, etc.

Like I said, it was less fun than root canal.

    SO HOW IS IT CORRUPT?

CleanMyMacs's presence is clearly indicated in the report you posted. Its developer's uninstallation instructions are ineffective, an common characteristic of a lot of garbage software. In addition, the effects of having used CleanMyMac cannot be reversed by merely uninstalling it, even if its developer's instructions were effective.

Therefore, its complete eradication requires erasing your Mac, as I wrote.

Uninstalling applications that are installed with an Administrator name and password generally requires using an complementary uninstaller. For others, merely dragging their icon to the Trash is sufficient. You don't need CleanMyMac to remove login items, or any other usual action. OS X already includes all the tools required. CleanMyMac is not capable of providing any addtional benefit.

It's your Mac, do with it as you wish, but installing any software presupposes the knowledge of how to get rid of it. You wouldn't invite strangers into your home without first knowing how to kick them out; so don't do that with a Mac either.
