I have had the same problem for a while, too, with the DELL U3011 and a late 2012 mini. Contacted apple support today and they had me reset the pRam. Restart and hold command-option and P and R keys before the gray screen comes up. It should chime again. Then release keys. Will see if that works.

Also tried below  but it did NOT solve my problem.

I'm having the same problem with the  U3011's DisplayPort connection from a new Mac Mini.  In the process of researching this, I discovered a parallel discussion regarding the U2711 monitor with a suggested fix.  I haven't been able to test this out yet, but thought I'd fold the other discussion in here:

"My problem is resolved. U2711 can wake up together with mac mini after I disable DDC/CI (i.e. menu > Other Settings > DDC/CI) on U2711."

Turns out none of these worked for me, either.

My current workaround when my monitor goes into power saver mode is to put the computer to sleep via the keyboard (on my old style extended keyboard, control + the top right key on the numeric pad) and then press the "S" key for sleep.

The monitor comes back on when I hit any key to wake the computer up.

Not optimal but better than powering down.

I bought my monitor last January via the costco website only to learn Dell came up with a new model. Imagine it will be harder to get a solution for a "legacy" product. Dell tech support has been responsive via twitter, but I have not followed up on this issue.

BTW, I swapped out my apple dual link adapter for

Accell B119B-007J UltraAV Mini DisplayPort to DisplayPort Cable

Available on monoprice.com or via amazon. Gives the same resolution.

It solved a problem where the monitor would start to snow (like an analogue TV set to a weak channel)

Please file this under advice that probably won't help. Good luck!

For what it's worth, some of us are having similar problems with brand new Mac Pros and Dell UP2414Qs:

Mac Pro with Dell UP2414Q Sleep Wake Issue

My only (ugly) workaround is to unplug/replug the display cable each time I want to use my Mac! Better that than force rebooting.
