Q: I read troubleshooting support for Facetime after Apr 16, 2014 but I have to pay for Facetime upgrade?

I have OS v10.6.8. My software is all up to date. Facetime was not prompted to be updated. The other suggestion I read is to go to App Store to upgrade Facetime, but I have to pay for it. Shouldn't it be a free upgrade? Is paying for it the only way to get Facetime to work again?

    Hello MWAUS

FaceTime was included with OS X 10.7 and later. For people using OS X 10.6 it was a paid upgrade after the beta was completed. If you do not want to pay for FaceTime upgrade you could always upgrade to OS X 10.9 Mavericks for free and pay nothing.

To participate in video calls, your Mac needs:

    • ▪ OS X Mountain Lion, OS X Lion or Mac OS X v10.6.6 (or later) with all available security updates installed.
      • For Mac OS X v10.6.6 or later, the FaceTime App needs to be purchased from the Mac App Store. OS X Mountain Lion and OS X Lion include FaceTime.

So I'm running OS 10.7.5 and when I go to the App Store it wants to charge me for the update. It doesn't show up in Software Update either. How do I get it without having to pay? Yes, I know its only .99 but I shouldn't have to pay for something that they broke.

    Hi,

I am ready to give in and buy Facetime upgrade which I still don't think it is fair to the OS X 10.6 users out there. We paid for our laptop too and what is one free upgrade in exchange for consumer satisfaction and loyalty.

Anyway, I tried to buy it from App Store but the error message states that 'We could not complete your purchase. FaceTime is already installed on this computer. Choose Software Update from the Apple menu to check for available updates.'

My software update does not include Facetime. Only Mavericks. I cannot upgrade to Mavericks as I have other software installed which is not compatible with Mavericks. Can you further advise how to troubleshoot? I need to check up on my elderly parents who are living overseas and that's why I get them an ipad to use Facetime which is pretty easy for them to master. Now it is a white elephant as we have to revert to the phone. I will have to explore other video software if no other ways around it. Very frustrating!
