Q: Time Machine backup

How do I get Time Machine to start? It has been set up, validated, last back up is February. I have an external USB Seagate drive. I am on 10.6.8 and want to back up so I can upgrade to a newer OS. After I have the drive plugged in, then I double click and open TM. The star wars screen comes up with a space bar, and I see "today", but I cannot figure out how to "start" the backup. I see no icon or menu. (All the documentation I can find tells me how to set it up for the first time or to restore........) This should be a simple command, but I can't figure it. Thanks,
