Q: iOS 7.1 -bluetooth will not connect to Mac

After Upgrading to iOS 7.1 on 2 iphones  (5 and 5c),  neither will now connect to either of my computers via bluetooth.

All I see is a message that Network is unavailable.   I can connect the phones to a bluetooth speaker, but not to the computers.

it can see the computer and my phone is discoverable. I forgot the device and repaired.   The phone cannot see the computer though I am right next to it. It says it isn't in range, and  Bluetooth on the computer says

"The device does not have the necessary services"

I deleted the phone from the computer and discovered again. Then paired again.  It connected for 2 seconds and then disconnected.  Multiple attempts to connect cause the same 2 second connection and disconnect behavior.

Never had this problem till 7.1....

I'm on the Latest mavericks on my 2 computers.

Mac Pro (Early 2008), OS X Mavericks (10.9), ATI RHD 2600 XT-10G RAM-2xQuadCore

    Hi, Chris CA.

Strange, but it's a fact you can't change.

What is a fact? The fact that you don't know the difference between bluetooth and WiFi?

    What is strange?

That you cannot sync your iPhone to your Mac via bluetooth?

Not strange at all. They don't sync via bluetooth.

    Do this.

Turn off bluetooth on your iPhone and your Mac and they will still sync via wifi...

Please tell me what they are so that I can avoid them. You have absolutely NO IDEA what you're talking about.

    I have.

It doesn't work because there is no bluetooth profile on the Mac for the iPhone.

iTunes does not sync via bluetooth. (which is why it states it syncs via wifi).

How mistaken someone was!!! I'd like to enable an existing auxiliary to have the diverse capability of sending files! Are you kidding me, just because of a software "upgrade" the inherent hardware functionality of Bluetooth is lost? Duh , hello?!?

You can not lose what never existed.

Bluetooth file transfer has never been a feature of the iPhone.

Jefferis, I have been using my MacBook Pro (2008) and my iPhone 4 linked through Bluetooth for years as a "HotSpot" to access the internet.   I just "upgraded" (that's debatable) from Snow Leopard to Mavericks OS 10.9.4 about a month ago, and then recently decided to also upgrade from iOS 5 to iOS 7.1.1.  My Bluetooth connection was working fine as recently as a week ago, and then when I tried to link this morning, I received the same messages your were getting.  After reading some more posts, I decided to try the Go to Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings to erase my Bluetooth IDs.  I turned off the Bluetooth on both the MacBook and the iPhone, waited a short while and then turned them back on.  I also made sure the the "Personal Hotspot" button was turned on for the iPhone.  After a few minutes, they finally recognized each other and I am up and running.

"What we got here is failure to communicate!"  For those of you (Chris CA, roaminggnome, KiltedTim) that were arrogantly telling Jefferis that he can't sync through Bluetooth, you are correct.  However, Jefferis never said that he was attempting to "sync", all he wanted was Bluetooth connectivity.

As I am typing this, my MacBook is connected to the internet via my iPhone Hotspot through Bluetooth, and my Wi-Fi is turned off on both the Mac and the iPhone. Have a great day!

While we may have a failure to communicate, it may lie with you and not Chris, Time and roaminggnome. The discussion about whether or not it was possible to sync over BT was not with him but was in response to 4pp131n51d3r who kept insisting they were able to sync over BT.  At the top of each post, you can see a line that says "in response to....."

    Arnuminous -

Your post is not entirely accurate. For starters, your comment...

However, Jefferis never said that he was attempting to "sync", all he wanted was Bluetooth connectivity.

In fact, in response to my question about the purpose of linking his iPhone and Mac over Bluetooth, Jeffries responded as follows. iTunes sync - which he sure appears to be describing here - is, and never was possible over Bluetooth. So, in fact, Jefferies did say that he was attempting to "sync".

bluetooth would update itunes libraries and the like, perform auto upgrades to apps and the like.  Was working fine until 0S7

Also, to be clear, if you read through the thread you will see that except for one exception, none of the people you mentioned were responding to Jeffries directly, but rather to other posters who insisted "syncing" over Bluetooth is possible. In particular, 4pp131n51d3r. As you already correctly pointed out, it isn't possible.

    You also said...

Happy to hear you managed to get your Bluetooth connectivity working. The process you followed to delete Bluetooth profiles is the standard protocol to repair broken Bluetooth connections. This can be found in other threads as well as in Apple's Knowledgebase article here: iOS: Troubleshooting Bluetooth connections

Finally, my own thoughts on the ability to use BT as the connection point for Personal Hotspot. I think Apple will soon be deprecating the use of Bluetooth for this purpose. Just because it was possible, does't mean it will continue to be - or even should. If you have the ability to use WiFi at a higher bandwidth, why would you choose to use an older and slower technology? Just because? This is analogous to the complaints Apple received when they removed Floppy Drives. Then CD/DVD drives. Those technologies aren't as necessary as they once were because faster SSD drives in higher capacities and at more reasonable prices are available.

    Just my two cents.
