Q: iTunes Producer 3.0 keeps crashing and I have no idea why...

I've just installed (and uninstalled and reinstalled) iTunes Producer 3.0. I have a Retina MacBook Pro running Mavericks and I made sure I had the recommended 20 Gigs of free space. I have no other problems with other programs crashing.

I can't do ANYthing with Producer. If I type in any information, make any selections, or even try to just save, the program hangs, I get the spinning beachball and eventually I just have to force quit.

Is anyone else having this issue with 3.0? If so, how did you solve it? I don't suppose there's a link to the previous version anywhere for me to try?

Thanks!

~Brian

Are you talking about the .itmsp file or the ebook? The .itsmp file you just duplicate in the Finder and then rename it as you normally would.

    The ebook file...

Okay. Looking at your newly renamed duplicate .itsmp file, control-click (or right-click) on the file. A contextual menu should pop up; one of the first items is "Show Package Contents." Select it. Essentially, you've just gone inside of your .itsmp file as if it were a Finder folder. (Well, that's all it really is. A lot of files work this way. Take a look inside of a .docx file sometime.)

There will be three items inside (unless you've included screenshots): the cover image, the ePub file, and an XML file titled metadata.xml. The XML file's the one you want to edit. Open it in any text editor (TextEdit will work). All of the metadata that you entered into iTunes Producer will be there — the title, the ISBN, the 'vendor id,' etc. The essential items to change are the ISBN and the vendor id (which you can use the ISBN for if you want or the title or whatever); that will become the name of the file after you open it in iTP.

Important: don't have any spaces inside of the <vendor_id></vendor_id> or <identifier></identifier> tags! XML doesn't like white space, so replace spaces with dashes, underlines, or periods.

While you're at it, you could change the title, etc, but honestly — it's easier to do most of the work in iTP.

Navigate out of the "folder." It will now once more be treated as an iTunes Producer file. Double click on it and you should be able to edit everything.

BTW, don't try swapping out the ePub or any images while you're inside the package. iTunes Producer keeps track of exactly how large the files are — down to the byte — and if you're off, the file won't upload.

FYI, if you have TextWrangler, BBEdit, Dreamweaver, or another good text editiing app, you don't even need to open the package; you can use the Open File... dialog to go into the package and edit the metadata.xml directly.

But wow — I'm still stunned that here we are, months later, and iTP 3 is still crashing.

    Oy. I didn't read. Sorry.

You meant the app. You need to have admin privileges to do that. Sign into an admin account. Or, if you're comfortable using the Terminal, enter something like:

         sudo mv ~/Downloads/"iTunes Producer" ~/Downloads/"iTunes Producer 2.9"

You'll have to type in your password.

(If you're not an admin, you can use the login to log in to the other account in the Terminal while remaining in your usual account in the Finder.)

You change it like you change any other filename on the Mac: by clicking on it, then clicking again and holding for just a second, then waiting for the name to change into an editable box.

If that gives you trouble, then just click on it once to select it, then choose Get Info from the File menu. Under Name & Extension, you'll see an editable box. Change it to  "iTunes Producer 2.9.app." The option "Hide extension" should already be checked, making the ".app" invisible.

Has anyone tried contacting Apple to fix the problem?  I have been going around and around with them for three weeks and I have gotten nowhere. I have explained the problem to Apple numerous times. I have even told them to look at the support community chat, which would help them understand the problem with iTunes Producer 3.0.  Any suggestions?

The problem Apple face is that -  compared to the total users of iTP - those having problems are relatively few.

Add to the problem that crashes can happen for any number of problems including,  low memory, most only have  standard memory ( 4gig?) wifi / wired connection blips, content clash, other apps being open - this list can  go on.

Apple claim they do not monitor these groups... so I doubt they would  take time to check on request - any  group.

Its suggested every time... but is the machine and iBA  up to date?  Close all apps and windows, if you can optomise  memory..."Memory Clean" is a free app that  cleans the memory. Just  checked mine only 140 meg free... run the app and its now 2.6gig free!

There is no way to replicate your problem so  its virtually impossible to suggest a solution.

All of that is true — but I'm running a stock 2013 MacBook Pro 2.9GHz with 8GB of factory RAM with both OS X Mavericks and iTunes Producer 3.0 up-to-date . It doesn't matter if I'm on ethernet or wifi, whether I run it with nothing else open or not — the problem is exactly the same. We're talking a piece of Apple software running on a piece of Apple hardware that's running an Apple operating system. If there's a compatibility problem, I have a hard time seeing how it can be environmental.

I can replicate it just fine on a Mac Pro running 10.9.2, with 14 GB of RAM, wired LAN, other apps open or not, fresh reboot or not (should never be needed). So can all of my music-uploading comrades on various other Macs. iTP 3.0.0 freezes up within seconds. Reverting to iTP 2.9.1 works perfectly.

What we really need is some in-house Apple QA on this app. I'm not sure there is any. I've reported (and had confirmed & seen fixed) several obvious bugs myself over the years.

I have the same issue on a MBP retina with 16GB RAM running mavericks: it crashes whether I add an image, enter a title, anything.

Can anyone tell me how to get iTunes Producer to open? I had 3.0 installed and every time, it kept taking me back to the stupid box icon. I uninstalled and tried v. 1.9 and it's doing the same thing.

Has anyone yet come up with a way to use 3.0? Also, what are the differences between 2.9 and 3? I'm being forced to use 2.9 because 3 doesn't work.

SanityFox, you are lucky if you got 2.9 to work. I finally gave up on both the 2.9 and 3.0 and went back to iAuthor and messed around with it until I got a workable template for a fiction book. Can't comment on how Producer works, since I could never get it to load, but iAuthor is not a user-friendly software. The biggest problem is that it doesn't preserve formatting, so I spend hours repairing, which is a huge chunk out of my writing day. Got two books done so far, four to go. If someone knows some secret on how to get formatting to remain intact, I'd love to hear it.
