Q: reinstalling mavericks

I have been given a macbook pro (i have no idea of the year, make, model or anything else to go on)

It has been completey wiped... I was then asked to put mavericks and various other different things on to it.

It comes up with four options:

     - Disk Utility

     - Restore from Time Machine Backup

     - Reinstall OS X (picture of a mountain lion)

     - Get help online

The macbook didnt have the mountain lion OS X put on there to begin with and when i try to click the restore button - it states that it is damaged.

I tried downloading mavericks, mountain lion and lion, putting them all onto disks and putting them into the laptop but that cant seem to find anything.

The Time machine isnt working either

What else can I do ?

Also, if you do decide to download mavericks, it will go into your Applications folder and it may start the program. It will not update your system automatically; what you want to do is copy "Install OS X Mavericks.app" from the Applications folder and put it on your desktop and cancel the installation screen. From there we can make the boot disk if you want.

So I cannot use the credit card....

I tried downloading loads of different Mavericks, always goes back straight to Apple App store where it says I have to put in my bank details - which I don't want to do....

The Mavericks I thought was on the disks will not upload on the disk utility on the macbook pro for some reason

So am at a bit of a loss of what to do now

    Hi again Froggie:

    1. Are are you using the  App Store app on your mac to connect to the Mac App Store?
    2. Are you in the process of creating an Apple ID? If not what exactly is asking you for your bank account or credit card?
    3. Mavericks is definitely free. If you are creating your Apple ID, you won't be charged for Mavericks.

if at any time you want to take a screen shot on your mac to show us what's going on, do it this way:

    1. press shift command 4 all together. The mouse pointer will change into a cross +
    2. Hold down the left mouse button and drag over the area of the screen you want a picture of, then let it go
    3. A file will be created like screenshotxxx.png on your desktop.
    4. When you make a reply click the camera icon and choose the file that was put on your desktop

I tried downloading loads of different Mavericks,

There is only one Mavericks, what did you download?

The Mavericks I thought was on the disks will not upload on the disk utility on the macbook pro for some reason

Mavericks does not come on disk

So am at a bit of a loss of what to do now

It's simple, if you won't enter a credit card you can't download Mavericks, it is your choice.

I'm simply trying to make sure that FroggieGardner is not on some web site that could be trying to rip him/her off. Do you have an issue with that?

When you find some site offering Mav downloads please let us know.

Right now there is no such site, except Apples App Store.

It was already established earlier that FroggieGardner had downloaded the mavericks security update, not the OS itself.

Ill re word that haha - i tried to download mavericks from various different sites .

I went onto the App store - typed in apple id and password etc it stated that i had to review it and put my bank details in - wouldnt let me skip

I went through apple online n ended up on App store and it basically did the same thing as above.

I took a couple of screenshots yesterday but it would not let me seen them on the comments :-S

I did download (what i thought was Mavericks) and put it on a disk as i want to put in on Macbook pro

A few people who work here (not literally in the office at the moment though) have downloaded it without putting their credit/debit card details into the App store - so trynig to figure out why my Mac wont let me do that

    Link to that post please.

And then explain why this error appeared if it was an update?

"This copy of the Install OS X Mountain Lion application is damaged, and can't be used to install OS X"

That does not appear if you try to install an update, even the combo update.

On the Laptop is states "This Copy of Install OS X Mountain Lion application is damaged, and can't be used to install OS X"  when I click on restore

I was told it didnt have Mountain Lion on it before (this itself is confusing)

I was told to install Mavericks which is what im trying to do now that wont work

WWell, as you said, your account t needs review ( or verification) so it's asking for your details for that purpose, not to charge you.

On a previous post I had you open that mavericks.dmg you downloaded already and all it was was a security update.

Here's what you need to know:

The original version of OSX that was supplied with the Mac.

So, exactly how old is this Mac.
