Q: reinstalling mavericks

I have been given a macbook pro (i have no idea of the year, make, model or anything else to go on)

It has been completey wiped... I was then asked to put mavericks and various other different things on to it.

It comes up with four options:

     - Disk Utility

     - Restore from Time Machine Backup

     - Reinstall OS X (picture of a mountain lion)

     - Get help online

The macbook didnt have the mountain lion OS X put on there to begin with and when i try to click the restore button - it states that it is damaged.

I tried downloading mavericks, mountain lion and lion, putting them all onto disks and putting them into the laptop but that cant seem to find anything.

The Time machine isnt working either

What else can I do ?

It was already established earlier that FroggieGardner had downloaded the mavericks security update, not the OS itself.

    Link to that post please.

Hi Froggie, if you don't mind, I'll stop this pointless banter between Csound1 and myself; it will only serve to confuse and Csound1 obviously has a problem with me. I hope Csound1 can resolve your problem.

    OK

You need to buy a copy of Snow Leopard (on disk) from Apple. Here is a link to the order page.

Once you have installed Snow Leopard you will update it to 10.6.8 which will give you access to the App Store from where you can upgrade to any other version using your Apple ID. A credit card will be required.

I have a problem with needless side issues. Without some basic info regarding the Mac this is just 'banter'

Thank you for all you help SilverSkyRat, sorry to be such a pain in the bum im not exactly techincal.

Csound1 - as I mentioned before no one here has had to put all their bank details in or pay and I certainly am not.

Then you're back where you started, Snow Leopard is not free and it's the one you need. But if you won't pay $20 you are not going to be able to move forward.

    Good luck.

Hi again Froggie, you never were a pain Let's get back on track:

It's a given that you don't want to enter those details fair enough and all is not lost.

It's a given that you have a toasted mac from 2008; lets leave that to one side for now.

It's a given that you were trying to download Mavericks from the Mac App Store, on your Mac.

So, as I see it, two choices:

    1. Get one of your co-workers to sign into the Mac App Store on your computer so that you can complete the download.
    2. Get one of your co-workers to do the download on their Mac, and either build the bootable USB Install Media on that Mac, or copy "Install OS X Mavericks.app" from their Mac to yours so you can do the build.

Also, if you do decide to download mavericks, either on your Mac or on a co-worker's Mac, it will go into the Applications folder and it may start the program. It will not update your system automatically; what you want to do is copy "Install OS X Mavericks.app" from the Applications folder and put it on your desktop and cancel the installation screen. From there we can make the boot disk if you want.

This is a licensing violation, and it will link the copy of Mavericks to the co-workers account, leaving it unrestorable for the OP. Please check your facts.

Same problem, Mavericks must be downloaded using the account it is to be used on.

Please don't suggest that posters try to circumvent Apple's licensing terms.

Not at all. If he boss owns or controls the macs in question , using the bosses Apple ID is not any kind of violation.

He said that the Mac was given to him. That would seem to suggest that he owns it, not his boss.

And why ignore the fact that if Mavericks is downloaded on someone elses account the OP will not be able to use it for Recovery.

Your advice is ill thought out.

But you can fix it now, I have had enough of sideline participants.

Good luck and watch out for licensing violating suggestions.
