Q: reinstalling mavericks

I have been given a macbook pro (i have no idea of the year, make, model or anything else to go on)

It has been completey wiped... I was then asked to put mavericks and various other different things on to it.

It comes up with four options:

     - Disk Utility

     - Restore from Time Machine Backup

     - Reinstall OS X (picture of a mountain lion)

     - Get help online

The macbook didnt have the mountain lion OS X put on there to begin with and when i try to click the restore button - it states that it is damaged.

I tried downloading mavericks, mountain lion and lion, putting them all onto disks and putting them into the laptop but that cant seem to find anything.

The Time machine isnt working either

What else can I do ?

    Sorry i didnt reply sooner,

I need to download it to my Mac and then put it onto Macbook Pro which will be used by someone else.....would that mean they would have to use my Apple ID on the MBP if they have the Mavericks I downloaded (thats if i can get it downloaded_)

The MBP has been used by various different people in the office but has only been wiped once.

Yes, the OSX download is linked to the account holder, not the machine.

Hi Froggie, if indeed your boss no longer owns the 2008 mac in question, you can, on your Mac, complete the verification of your Apple ID by supplying the details, downloading mavericks (you will not be charged for it) and proceed with making the bootable USB install disk.

Just saw your Csound1's latest reply; to clear it up, who actually will own the mac in question: the business or the other person?

Then they must use their own Apple account.

I told you how to fix that, buy a copy of Snow Leopard, then update to whatever version of OSX you (they?) need.

That way it will work, and not be a licensing violation.

Ok, so if the mac in question will be owned or under the exclusive control of that other employee (in other words you are not responsible for re-installing it should the need arise) then it is the other employee who can sign into the Mac App Store on another Mac and download Mavericks (as the download is tied to the Apple ID account, not the machine). Once the other employee has performed the download, copy "Install OS X Mavericks.app" out of the Applications folder and either we build the bootable USB Install disk on that Mac or copy it off to your (or even yet another) Mac to do the build.

FYI, later on, when Mavericks is installed on the mac in question, having a full time machine backup and having the bootable USB Install disk will mean that the other employee will not require the Internet Recovery way of restoring the machine.

If they haven't started at your business yet, contact them and ask them to download it and send it to you or bring it in on a USB stick.

Can the other employee download it onto my mac using his apple id? ... it wil have to be on my mac or someone else Mac because nothing can be accessed on the MBP

If they downloaded at home would they have to have a mac to be able to download it? Might sound like a silly question but before I would here I never used a Mac let alone download things for it

They can use your mac to download mavericks as long as they sign in to the Mac App Store using their own Apple ID. Make sure the also sign out when done.

They do need a mac to download it. If they have one at home they can do it there and give it to you on a stick.

You're welcome   Don't forget what I said above about copying "Install OS X Mavericks.app" out of the Applications folder. Reply back with any hassles or when you're ready to go ahead with making the bootable USB install disk.
