Q: Sleep/wake crash OSX Mavericks, Macbook Air 2013

Hi there,

Since the upgrade to Mavericks my 2013 Macbook Air had a few sleep wake crashes. The problem occurs when my air turns to sleep, and I try to wake it with the keyboard within a very short time.(1-3 seconds I think) Happened a few times when I was typing and accidently pressed the on/off button while typing(which is a really stupid feature in the new OSX if you ask me) and a few times when I tried to safe my laptop from going to sleep because it was idle for to long, and just got there to late. What happens is that the Macbook just gives a black screen, but is still on. I cant let it sleep by closing the lid, and the only way to get it running again is by restarting.(holding down the on/off button)

Couldnt find anything similar to this. So i'm hoping if this is a common problem with Mavericks and is on the list to be fixed with the new patch.

I hope you guys have some info.

    Hello All,

I have the same problem with OSX 10.9.2 using MacBook Pro 13" 2.3 Ghz Intel Core i5 Early 2011.

I have a Crucial M4 SSD2 with 128 GB drive. I upgraded the firmware to the latest revision: 070H thinking the problem was related to my SSD. I am still having the same problem when my laptop sleeps. I get a blackscreen with mouse cursor and it basically hangs.

    Gang,

Same problem with my 2009 Mac Pro.  I have to unplug it for an hour or so (maybe less, but longer than 10 or 15 minutes) to be able to restart.  Have reset everything but it still happens whenever it goes to sleep or I "sleep" it.  Even a hard restart won't work for some time.

Occasionally happens with my late 2013 MBP.  APPLE, Help!!!

I'm confident you won't get Apple help here, so you'll either have to take advise from us users, use AppleCare or head for an Apple Store Genius Bar or certified Apple repair facility. There's no evidence that Apple even reads most of these postings, especially a lengthy one such as this.

Actually, I went to Apple Chat and discussed the problem with an agent.  She is forwarding our discussion, including all the things mentioned in this blog and all the types of computers affected, to the software folks, then I went to Contact Support and did the same including asking them to review this blog.  We'll see!

Just an update from my end:

The problem has not been solved against an earlier statement after a couple days of observations.

I start get annnoyed. I can't really use the iMac anymore and think about switching to something which works and where the support is better...

I honestly can't believe that your issue has anything to do with what is being discussed here. There have been many complaints regarding laptops and as far as I know your's is the only desktop that has brought it up here.

I think you would be much better off starting your own discussion over in the iMac Forum with a much more complete description of your specific problem and perhaps an EtreCheck posting to show us your setup. That will likely bring you much more help than you will ever get here.

Then come back here and give us a link to your new posting.

Well I have a desktop with the same problem. There arre so many discussion forums about this you'd think Apple would get on this. My iMac is almost useless since upgrading to Mavericks and this rediculous Malck Screen of Death is affecting thousands (of desktop as well as laptop) users.

Are you referring to a Kernel Panic? If so, where is your Panic report? About 50% of those are caused by hardware issues (primarily peripherals and most of those USB, with some graphics cards and RAM bad or misseated) and the other 50% are third party Kernel Extensions. To be honest, of the hundreds of such reports I've seen, I don't recall a single one that was OS X related, so I can't help but wonder why we're talking about such things in a Mavericks Forum?

I can confirm, this is not just a laptop problem, since after upgrading to Mavericks, I started experiencing the problem on my iMac which was working perfectly with Mountain Lion.

I receive the same sleep/wake failure crash report all the time and have sent the report to Apple several times. I also reported the bug and had back and forth communications with them, since I am a developer. They generally say, they can't reproduce the problem, this brings us to the possibility that maybe, some third party apps conflict with sleep/wake settings of Mavericks.

Anyway, for those who say their Macs are useless because of this problem. A workaround is to disable all the energy saver settings of the Mac and always put the computer to sleep manually. This, reduces the failurs significantly.

Disable "Automatic graphics switching".  This seems to help me significanty.  Funny thing is I had it enabled for months and only recently has it become an issue.  I do have a MacBook mid-2010 which apparently had an issue with GPU/Video switching do to a supposed NVidia defect.

Good luck and reply back if you figure out a fix.

    Madmacs0,

For the desktops not being here are you speaking to the folks with the iMacs or the ones with the Mac Pros (big floor computer).  I entered this forum due to its title "Sleep/wake crash OSX mavericks..." since it appears to be happening to both, at least for me...  Not trying to start a rant by anyone, just trying to get you guys, who many times know more than the Apple folks early on in a problem (which doesn't appear to be early on) in on a solution for us all.

    Well let's see . .

Everyone had a previous operating system that worked just fine. Then we all "upgraded" to Mavericks. Then we all started getting the Black Screen of Death. Yep. We all think it's a Mavericks problem.

Not everybody by any imaginable measure. I did exactly what you outlined and have never suffered a single Kernel Panic upon since I upgraded to Mavericks. I'd be willing to bet that the majority of users have not either. Rather than being a Mavericks problem might this be a Mavericks improvement to the process of detecting issues at the Kernel level?

Again I've participated in or observed dozens of these complaints here in the Forum and almost every one was solved by removing a troublesome piece of third party software, reseating or replacing RAM or replacing a defective Graphics board. I'd guess that less than 10% of those who allowed there system to undergo troubleshooting from Forum members or better yet, an Apple repair facility remained unsolved.

    I've found the problem!!

Mavericks for some reason overheats the GPU.

I downloaded a free 3 day trial of Temperature Gauge Pro   http://www.tunabellysoftware.com/tgpro/

It showed a GPU 0 diode temperature of 122 degrres C. I think that's about 250 degrees Farenhiet. Insanely hot. No wonder the poor thing was crapping out. TGP alows fan control and so I set them to maximum and watched the temp come down quickly.

After all these months of frustration it turned out to be a simple fix. So I bought the program for $10. Sure a lot cheaper than having the Apple Experts replace a GPU or CPU like some have sugested.

What I still can't figure out is why Apple won't fix the problem from thier end and just update the fan parameters on Mavericks.

Since I also have an iMac, you've peaked my interest. I see you've published the same information in a dozen or so places, so good for you for sharing, but I still can't figure out what year/model iMac you have and your profile doesn't tell me.

My GPU temp runs about half what yours was (~120ºF), but what I notice using Temperature Monitor is that there are no specified Min or Max temperatures associated with the GPU. That would lead me to believe that it may not be used to control fan speed at all. Mine has three fans which are associated with the Optical Drive, Hard Disk Drive and CPU. The other thing is that this sort of thing is normally controlled by firmware and not the OS. Fan Control utilities allow you to override these settings while during the time it runs, but I'm not aware of any that can reset the default parameters.

I know you are going to come back and tell me that you never had this problem with your previous OS and I would agree that's certainly a possibility, but I'm not convinced that the root cause is fan speed, rather it might be something with the driver software that's overloading your GPU.
