Q: No Dolby Digital Apple TV 3 firmware 6.1 (6698.99.16)

Hi

I was running the above firmware on my main appletv, and noticed that Dolby Digital (DD) over spdif had stopped working, both in netflix and when streaming from itunes on my computer. I then took my daughters appletv and connected it to my receiver through spdif, and now DD worked, my daughters appletv was running firmware 5.3 (6105). I tried software resetting my main unit a couple of times, but that did not help. Lastly I updated my daughters appletv to firmwar 6.1, and then DD stopped working on that unit too...

Since then I have cuorisly found that DD is now working on my main unit, when I stream movies from itunes, but still not when watching a netflix-movie...

Anyone out there who have had the same problem?

Cheers Perer

    ???

The Netflix streaming issue that started in November was fixed for many (but unfortunately not all) in mid December.

Now it it is certainly not clear what is going on with DD and the latest updates - but here is what we know.

    - Most Netflix streamers use DD+ for 5.1 audio - only the Apple TV (and possibly some Tivos) get DD 5.1 streams from Netflix.

    - Netflix DD worked great until the 6.1 update

    - It worked fine for a few days after the recent update

    - All other apps (iTunes, HBO GO, etc) have no problem with DD on the Apple TV

Keep posting here (ignore those that say Apple doesn't monitor the forums) - their second level tech support confirmed they do (and frankly it would be shocking if they didn't) - but also let both Apple and Netflix know this issue needs to be fixed through all channels.

My guess is that Netflix is more focused on supporting all the other devices that use DD+ and the Apple TV is seeing issues because it is one of a very few devices that get DD from Netflix.

I do not really understand why noting that this occurs when connected to a receiver is a key finding.  I would suspect that most people who play DD 5.1 would use a home theater receiver.

But yes, I have the netlfix 5.1 problem also.

I spoke to two people at Netflix and found them relatively unhelpful.

Ha ha, I was thinking the same thing. We know that DD 5.1 is not being received when connected to an AVR... Frankly because that is the only way that I know of that you can tell. If there's a TV that does 5.1 on it's own with it's own speakers. I'd love to know the brand and model so I can smash it up at the stores. As it's a complete fake.

Just saying... 5.1 or anything above 2.0 is only pleasurable through a true AVR. Not even a sound bar will cut it.

It would seem that the solution would be for Apple to update the firmware to support DD+ (Enhanced AC-3). Why they don't yet is known only to them.

Hmm. My samsung relays the digital audio signal to my AVR. Though it doesn't decode the audio in itself, you can select which signal you want the TV to pass on (be it 2ch or Dolby Digital or DTS - and they really are labeled as such!). Anyway, the surround codecs have been greyed out since the problem arose again. The choices become available if the appropriate audio signal is present.

Anyway, just wanted to let y'all know that, some TVs can let you know what signal is coming through, given the ATV is connect via HDMI or with Optical cable to TV.

I don't know what the people from Netflix where smoking, but this was a chat with Kenneil from Netflix:

"Yes I just checked on that and there is no resolution just yet but I personally believe that my team "The Netflix Ninjas" and the "Apple Assassins" are working hand in hand in overcoming this problem. I am aware that it has been a while now.. however you know how technology can be, in the mean time I can say that hey you can watch on any other device you have there and keep checking in with us, to see if there's any updates on this..I personally apologize for the inconvenience"

    ...

"Ah man! I can totally understand how you feel, it reminds me of last night I went home and the electricity went, it did take quite a long time to get back, no one likes to be uncomfortable".

    So, no real answer yet.

Well, instead of using AirPlay or 'any other device' I have chosen to use my AVR's (Yamaha RX-V673) built in signal processor with numerous 5.1 surround simulations. The Sci-Fi Movie setting produces a particularly good result with Netflix streams. It is simply not worth my time to get all upset and outraged over this issue which, at best, should be only mildly annoying until it is resolved. I can wait. I can make due. I am not outraged and inconsolable over it.

Should add I have a Yamaha 475 so I can confirm Netflix Dolby 5.1 works via my smart tv app but not my appletv3

Well, we know that but there's nothing we can do to help you. We just have to wait for Apple and Netflix to fix it. Did you send feedback to Apple? Did you contact Netflix and open a report? You need to do that.

I can confirm that Netflix DD 5.1 issue is only on Appletv 3. I have PS3 with Netflix app and Dolby Digital 5.1 works fine. No issues. Actually, PS 3 apps is better because it has option for subtitles now.

Hello rookie8155, I can't believe this from Apple , I have other several devices with Netflix-DD 5.1 working excellent.

The problem is that in my living room the Apple eco-system is a MUST.

How could I downgrade to 5.3 software my Apple TV 3?
